Per my Doctor I take 5000 units Vitamin D daily.  It's amazing how much better I feel since beginning this regimen.  I get blood work semi annually.

I'm taking 4000 IUs a day as per my doctor but now I wonder if that is excessive? My Vitamin D reading came in at 27, and it's now up to 40. I hate taking pills.

Did your doctor say to keep taking it after you had your latest reading?  If so, then keep taking it.

Your doctor knows you better than we do.

Also, what Vitamin D are you taking?  I take Andrew Lessman's 5000 mg per day and it is the tiniest pill on the planet.

I take 5000 a day.  She took my blood a year later and kept me on it and then another year later I was still where she wanted me to be.  She said to back it off but I didn't understand that.  Why would I do that if it's keeping me where you want to be?

She did the same thing with me with iron.  I came off and then she told me I was anemic again and to go back on.  I've been on it ever since.  No issues or too high of a concentration every year.  I'm good.

If you don't trust what your doctor is telling you and are coming to strangers on a shopping channel BB for medical advice, I'd say it's time for a new doctor.

I switched doctors last year and for the first time ever, she checked my vitamin levels.  My Vitamin D was low so I was put on I believe it was 2,000 IUs every other day for about 2 months. Then she waited 2 weeks and had me go for bloodwork just to have my level tested again.  It came back fine and I didn't have to take anymore pills.

I'll have bloodwork done again in February.

@Reever,

Technically you are still deficient at a level of 40.   A normal range is 50-70.   I take D3-5000 units 3x a week, and always test in a normal range.  Too high is going to be 80-100.

I take the same amount...5000, three days a week.

Here's an interesting map. Shaded areas are where people are at relatively greater risk for vit D deficiency and most likely need to supplement more than those that are not in the shaded area.

Besides this, people with chronic liver disease are also often Vitamin D deficient.

Make sure to take Vitamin K2  MK7 with the D3 to put the calcium in your bones and teeth, not in kidney stones, bone spurs and arteries.

Magnesium is also necessasary.....

@Reever

You have to take 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test to check your levels.

@Reever

When I was in the hospital for 6 days with Cellulitis, my first blood reading came back as a 10. Believe my dosage while on Vitamin D, while on IV antibiotics, was 75,000. My last blood draw before I was released was 20. Have had 2 more since my hospital stay and the both were close to 50.

After release I have been taking 2,000mg capsule per day. Going to have it checked again in about 3 months. Seems to be just right for me.

It is not excessive, Dr Weil who i totally trust says up to 10,000 IU can safely be taken daily.
