I'm taking 4000 IUs a day as per my doctor but now I wonder if that is excessive? My Vitamin D reading came in at 27, and it's now up to 40. I hate taking pills.

My doctor recommend 2000 units a day. For awhile I was taking 5000 units on my own and my level went to 60. Too much Vitamin D can be associated with kidney stones too.

A close monitoring of your level needs to be done when taking such high levels.
Know the range that is acceptable for those results and monitor what a health care professional tells you once you get within that range, to not have excessive amounts in your system.
I agree that having the supervision of a health care professional and monitoring your numbers is important. Just be aware of what they are and what acceptable ranges are, and be sure the amount they prescribed/suggest don't send you over that range. Don't just take what you are told, understand where you are, where you need to be, and be sure you are being tested routinely to ensure your levels aren't too high.

Technically you are still deficient at a level of 40. A normal range is 50-70. I take D3-5000 units 3x a week, and always test in a normal range. Too high is going to be 80-100.

Vit D is a water soluable vit. make sure you drink plenty of water and do what your doctor says or get a second opinion. Most doctors will not order meds or vitamins unless it warranted.

You won't stay on 4,000 forever.
Once you get a "normal" reading, the doctor will probably back you off.
I have a diagnosis that requires I take Vit D for life, as my doctor tells me.
Now that I have my numbers up, I only take 400 IUs per day.
I hate taking pills to but I hate more being sick.

I take the same amount...5000, three days a week.
Here's an interesting map. Shaded areas are where people are at relatively greater risk for vit D deficiency and most likely need to supplement more than those that are not in the shaded area.

My doc advised 1,000 to 2,000 units per day based on my medical history. That's what I take. I listen to my wonderful doctor!

Well you're not alone hating to take pills. I have to take Vit. D 1000 iu daily as per my doctor orders and that seems to have sorted me out.
