How can doctors tell the differnce between a cyst or if it is cancer

I had told you about dh and prostate cance-that is just beginning so a doctor said we will wait and see. Now it is his liver and one doctor says cancer and another says it looks like a cyst. What would you do. I told him if they can't decide try another doctor. Or should he have a biopsy. Wouldn't he have to go under?
