He has never taken statins and does not want to start. If his is high, he will try to do things the natural way. He is in the insurance business and has heard many horror stories from clients who took statins and quickly came off. I know there are many who take them with no side effects...that's great. My mother's doctor is very against statins just for high cholesterol. He only prescribes it if there are other serious factors (heart problems, etc.) He does prescribe medications if absolutely necessary, but he's also told us that our society is an overmedicated one and he thinks most of the drugs prescribed are just a big "racket"!!!
Suspects he has high cholesterol? What exactly does that mean? Now to someone like myself that knows my body very well and has for decades, I "don't suspect anything". What I do is get it checked and find out what is happening, not what I think/or suspect.
Not many people if they live long enough that don't hear tons of "horror stories" about just about any physical ailment. Unless one goes through one personally they have not real knowledge of what "is horror or what is not horror". There are many that like to "make a mountain out of a mole hill" when it comes to something they experienced related to a health or physical injury.
I'd like to have a discussion with you mother's doctor about meds equal "a big racket". Sure there are many taking meds that are not necessary, in my opinion. But to say it is "a big racket"? I have doctors in my family and I have many very close friends that are also doctors and they only medicate when necessary. And in this I am including my Cardiologist who has had me taking Lipitor/Atorvastatin since 2003. And me one that has not had a high cholesterol reading since the 1960's when they first learned about what cholesterol meant in relation to heart disease.
What has your husband got against getting a full lipid panel blood draw?
Thanks for advice, but we will handle our health in our own way...it's worked perfectly for us so far. I'm glad you have many doctor friends who feel the way you mentioned; I also have a couple of doctor/nurse friends, and my mother has three doctors she has to see for different health reasons. (I go with her to all doctor appts., and I am very informed of decisions.) In fact, they all work very closely together so as not to prescribe anything that is not needed. I respect them for that. But I also know of many instances where doctors prescribe things at the drop of a hat...was just talking with a cousin last week that spoke of a doctor he had seen that would give him anything he asked for (if he was inclined)...the doctor even suggested something that was not even needed. My cousin is very cautious about medication and told the doctor "no thank you." I had an uncle who had any kind of medication you could think of almost...all because one doctor would prescribe something and then another doctor would prescribe something...never checking with the others...and my uncle never asked any questions. At the time of his death, he must have been on 20 different medications at least!
As far as "horror stories", I disagree about having to experience something personally before you have knowledge of something. We have a friend who took statins and almost immediately begin to have numbness and pain in the legs...could barely walk. He discontinued the statins, and his legs returned to normal. He has never taken any other choelsterol drug and has had no other problems...he just has a high reading...that's been 10-12 years ago. That's not making a mountain out of a molehill. I could go on and on about several personal instances we know of and MANY, MANY, MANY that my husband has heard from clients.
I am glad they work for some people. But I don't buy into this notion that a prescribed drug is always necessary. There are other ways to treat illnesses and conditions. I know many people who prefer to try and treat their health issues in a different way BEFORE medicating themselves. Yes, I do know, that sometimes medication is absolutely necessary. My mother is one of those people. And I am thankful that there are things that help her.
I'm glad that the medication has worked for you and you have had no side effects. You are one of those people who have been blessed in that area. Good for you!

It wasn't advice and "to each be their own".

If you want a second opinion, find a competent medical professional, please don't take advice from people who are may be terribly misinformed with very biased and way out beliefs that have no basis in fact. If your current doctor firmly believes you need to lower your cholesterol, and yet the medication he prescribes has side effects, then surely a second opinion is needed. Just don't look for it from non medical professionals with a lot of axes to grind. Your health is too important!
