I am trying to be more health conscience since early last year when I got diagnosed with diverticulitis. This topic has probably been discussed here because we all know by now that HFCS is bad for you. I think it helps to know how your body reacts to it. Not everybody understands ... I didn't .. and I think it's important to understand this one. I'm sharing a clip from a daily newsletter I get.
------HFCS horrors
High fructose corn syrup causes its own share of health horrors.
First of all, since your liver needs to break it down like a poison, HFCS puts a tremendous stress on your precious organ of detox.
And unlike glucose which is burned up by your body, HFCS turns into fatty acids, excess cholesterol and triglycerides, which in turn get stored as FAT.
As a matter of fact, artificially processed fructose causes THREE TIMES MORE fat storage than glucose!
Not only does this lead to the obvious weight gain, but these fatty deposits also accumulate in your liver and muscle tissues and lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
Plus unlike other foods, eating fructose has NO effect on your hunger hormones--in other words, you can eat it by the truckload and not ever feel full.
Sounds like a recipe for obesity to me.
In addition, studies have shown unsafe levels of mercury in high fructose corn syrup.
Mercury acts as a literal poison to your brain and nervous system. It has been linked to fertility problems, memory and vision loss, and trouble with blood pressure regulation.
It can also cause chronic fatigue and neuro-muscular dysfunction, and has been linked to autism, heart disease, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
So, my friend, the next time you see ads for products sweetened with HFCS that say, “Like sugar, it’s fine in moderation” you will know better.----

It's hard to believe how many foods still contain HFCS. I seldom eat HFCS, but when I do, I don't notice any reaction to it. However, I do notice reactions to artificial sweaters such as leg spasms and leg aches.

When I buy snacks (like granola bars) for the lunch bags, I'd rather spend more money and not buy anything with HFCS. I'll buy items from Cascadian Farms and Kashi.

I remember when a family member went to South America years ago. He commented on how much soda they drink, yet, they are not fat. The soda there is sweetened with cane sugar. I write letters now and then to my old favorite fast food restaurants' corporate offices, requesting sugar sweetened sodas, but it will never happen. (Not that I am ever going to eat there again anyway, but, thinking of the public...) Pepsi, for example, is heavily invested in GMO corn. What a nasty nutritional mine field we have here in the USA.
piperbay, be careful with Kashi. They are not the company they used to be. Kellogs bought them years ago. Unless they have cleaned up their act, the "natural" cereals are the ones to avoid. - Bird

I'm so tired of squeezing my eyes to read labels with food and skin care! But I do, because I've totally eliminated this from my diet. I just wish I could do the same for my DH, who wants the yogurt that he wants. (mad face!)
Good for you, Tabbycat, et. al.!

Don't forget that ALL ADDED SUGAR (agave, coconut sugar, honey, granulated sugar) causes many of the same things. Sugar is inflammatory.
It's important to limit ALL ADDED SUGAR. The American Heart Association has good guidelines for men and women in terms of limited the daily amounts. Other health organizations have different guidelines (just depending what you have or what your family history is).
Everything bashes HFCS (I have no problem with that), but you can't forget that added sugar is a problem in all forms because it's added to so many things you wouldn't even think had sugar in them.

Tabbycat,
I caught on to this a while back. If you have some time go on youtube and look up:
Sugar:The Bitter Truth
It certainly it an eye opener and has changed my opinion on most processed foods.
