I mistakenly thought I would keep my nearsightedness and just see better far away after cataract surgery. Nope. Now I need 2 different strengths of readers. To read the computer I use a 2.0 strength, but to see ingredients labels etc. in the grocery I need 3.0. The difficulty I have is wearing 2.0 on a chain with 3.0 in my purse and put them on my nose to watch tv across the room. The ones on a chain are alway dirty and prone to scratches. There must be others in the same predicament. What do you do?

My husband just had both eyes done, his surgeon told him he should buy several strengths of readers at the dollar store because the magnification needs would change and stabilize in about 6 weeks.
Also medicare pays for a new pair of glasses after cataract surgery once your eyes stabilize.

I went from 20/800 (yes that is correct) to 20/15 after my surgery. Never need a reader for anything.

I had cataract surgery in October and, like you, I was expecting only a change in my distance vision. the lenses I previously used for distance are now just right for reading and computer. my old reading glasses are way too strong. I did recently follow up with my optometrist and she gave me a prescription for new reading glasses but she said I really need to just experiment to find what I'm comfortable with. she said it really depends how far away (or close) you hold the book or computer when you read..
have you tried just using your old distance prescription for reading? I was so surprised at how dramatically my vision improved overall.

I had both eyes done (2 weeks apart) a couple months ago. My distance vision is now perfect. I need either #2 or #3 readers, like you, depending on what I'm doing... #2 for computer (PC) and #3 to do my nails.
My SIL got the lenses where she can see near OR far after her cataract surgery. I didn't go that route (long story). But I'm satisfied.

Since my surgeries, in the last year, I rarely need my readers anymore, but when I do i use my same 1.75 I did before.

My DH recently had both eyes done and we didn't know anything about this. Are we talking regular Medicare with a supplement? That's what he has. Or is this in an Advantage plan?

Just googled this: Medicare does not ordinarily cover prescription eyeglasses, with one exception. Because cataract surgery always changes the eyeglasses prescription, Medicare will cover one basic pair of glasses following cataract surgery.
My original question was how to keep the glasses on a chain from getting smudges and scratches while wearing them. Also the chains are a problem because the loops that go on the sides of the glasses---one broke the first day and the next one the loops are loose and come off the glasses too easily.

I am assuming its through regular, I read it in them medicare book that is mailed to our home. My husband gets kaiser supplemented with part a and b medicare through my retirment but this was in the regular medicare book. We haven't used it yet the doctor wants to wait until later in the month until his eyes stabilize. He had both eyes done the same day.

Well, this is good information. My dr and I just had this conversation. I had no idea that there were differently lenses and that all my rxs for glasses will change. I kept looking at him and saying really? He is so patient...He kept saying yes, really. I have some cute frames that I love so I will get new lenses put it. Those frames are way to cute not to wear!
