I take Protonix which is a proton pump inhibitor for acid reflux.  I do have a problem with orange juice and I also have problems with the water flavor squirts like Mio, but I can use a litte.  I have always assumed it was the citric acid.

For some reason my PPI has not been doing it's job lately.  Doctor suggested I try doubling up on it for a couple of weeks and see if it helps.  If not, more investigation may be necessary.

@SilleeMee , if I drink a lot of liquid at once, I feel sloshy.  I have the same problem with soups.  Pair that with a little acid reflux and it's not a good thing.

Now that you mention it me too. Maybe it's the water and not the drops. I only used one drop which is hardly any flavor.

I use 7 squirts in my water bottle with Mio, don't get heartburn,and the only way I will drink water. I use the tangerine, orange flavor not sure thats the right name, but its good.

Sometimes it is just a mystery what sets us off.

At best we can withhold the ingredient to check on it. Or go back to bland for a few days.

I tried to look this up but couldn't find the answer. I can drink orange juice and lemonade and not get heartburn but yesterday I put a drop of Mio Blueberry Lemonade liquid water enhancer in my water and got heartburn almost immediately. I also get it from bottled green teas with citrus. Anyone else have this issue.

@Lali1 @I get heartburn from citric acid that is added to foods and drinks. I don't get it from natural lemon juice or orange juice. Yesterday, I tried a new product, Dole frozen fruit with kale to my smoothie. I had horrible heartburn that lasted longer than the six hours I often have. It lasted twelve hours or more. I looked at the product in my freezer and Dole has added citric acid to the fruit to help the fruits maintain their appearance. I was surprised because I didn't expect the citric acid in the product. I investigated citric acid and how it's produced. There is natural citric acid in lemon juice. This doesn't bother me, however many manufacturers buy bulk citric acid as an additive. This type of citric acid is manufactured using BLACK MOLD. It's the most common type of citric acid additive and it's called synthetic citric acid. Not all of the bulk citric acids use this process with the mold. I just started drinking green tea. I bought organic tea bags from Publix. It's killing my stomach. There isn't any citrus in this green tea  product either. I have no idea how or why the green tea is so bothersome. In reading reviews of MIO there were many with people experiencing gastric distress. The ingredients are not good.

Water, Citric Acid, Gum Arabic, Sodium Citrate, Sucralose (Sweetener), Contains Less than 2% of Natural Flavor, Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate, Red 40, Blue 1, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative).

@SilleeMee @If I drink plain water at night anytime after having eaten an evening food, I get heartburn and reflux. I don't have to be lying down to have this happen either.  I've had GERD for a long time. I don't get this from drinking water in the daytime.

I think maybe I'm getting GERD and I'm not surprised b/c it's a symptom of my scleroderma. Seems to be getting worse. I'm sure if I mention it to my rheumy then I'll be put on some kind of PPI and I'm not too crazy about that.

I don't get heartburn unless I drink Lemonade.  This has been going on since I was a kid.  I can drink all other citris type drinks except Lemonade so I have avoided it forever.  For those suffering from heartburn, you have my utmost sympathy....

@SilleeMee @Sleep sitting up with as many pillows as you can. Avoid salt because it is irritating to the stomach lining. I was having a good response when adding one cup of yogurt, Dannon Whole Milk Vanilla, to my diet. I haven't been keeping up with this and I see a difference. I cut coffee way down and do not have it after 9 a.m. I kept a trigger food diary and kept ingredients for irritating foods. Certain baked goods always do it. Pepperidge Farms Cookies, Chessmen and Milano always cause stomach pain and it's the shortbread ingredients. Peppermint causes the SES valve to relax and it will cause reflux if I eat it while reclining or at night. I learned that thorough chewing is very important and there's a couple foods I can't chew well, so I've given them up. Chicken skin is one. I find potassium added to vegetables to allow mfr to cut sodium, upsets my stomsch. *Trisodium phosphate is in many baked goods and this causes stomach pain, especially if the food also contains citric acid. Avoid gum carageenan.

* As you know this additive can be called more than one thing on the label.

@Lali1

Only thing on your list I drink is OJ, and plain ole filtered H2o. I am on Nexium, but nothing to do with heartburn/gas or GERD.

I have Barrett's Esophagus and I need Nexium to help prevent Esophageal Cancer. Hope someone gives you an answer you are looking for here.

I have bad acid reflux and other stomach issues and am on 2 stomach medicines and at times still get acid or heartburn at times.  I cannot drink or eat anything citrus.  I learned that long ago.  I also have to make sure I don't eat a lot of tomato sauce or eat it often.  Another thing, I would avoid drinking out of straws -- not sure if this gives heartburn but it could cause air to be introduced or gas.  Drink much more plain old water.  Prop yourself up at night.  Also give yourself several hours after eating anything before you go to bed at night. If I think I might feel an issue, I have popped a couple tums before bed.  These are just things which work for me and I'm not saying these will do it for you.
