I was only 64 and still working when I got my first set of hearing aids. There's no way I could have continued w/o the hearing aids.  I'm on my third pair.

I don't have any issue wearing them.  No different than wearing glasses.

So many of my friends (women my age) wear hearing aids.  Really common around here  I wear my hair very short (sort of pixie) and the devices are quite visible.

Most theatres nowadays have telecoil installed for hearing aid wearers.

One of the best things about hearing loss .... when I want peace and quite, all I have to do is take the devices out of my ears!   If I'm in someplace noisy I can just press and lower the volume.

Only downside is the cost ... but they are worth every penny!

Hello friend. If I remember correctly you had an audiologist appointment and the testing showed you weren’t able to hear certain sounds.

Hearing aids are very advanced now and I hope you will go to your doctor and let them explain all the benefits of the hearing aids.

This is exactly what you need to make your life easier and more fulfilling.

Wouldn't you get glasses if you couldn't see?  Same situation with hearing aids.  You owe it to yourself to take advantage of the medical appliances that are available.  You could be a safety hazard to yourself if you can't hear.  I have two grandchildren who have been wearing hearing aids since they were in grade school.  What are you waiting for?  Your hearing is NOT going to get any better.

I will also say that most people don't even know I wear a hearing aid--even when I have my hair pulled up in a pony tail.  I think they are very unobtrusive nowadays.

@ALRATIBA  how long do your hearing aids last?  When mine went in for warranty work, they replaced it--so 3 years for me.  What is your experience?  I will have to pay for the next replacement.

You are fooling yourself.......denial, @halfpint1  which is natural.  No one wants to admit this part of aging.  Everyone else is mumbling, people talk too fast, etc.  all common excuses to put off getting your hearing tested.

What have you got to lose?  By not hearing all that is going on around you, you are missing out and it can be an aggravation to those around you.

One other thing to consider is that by not hearing as well as you should, you can be a hazard to others while driving a car.

Something to think about.  I wish you the best with this!

My mother finally got hearing aids 3 weeks ago.  Her hearing is so bad we have to shout into the phone. she opted for the cheap ones. $3400.

Well she returned them yesterday. She decided they weren't worth it because people could see them in her ear and she turns up the TV loud anyway.

did i mention she had an accident a few days after she got them?  she didn't like them in her ears so she didnt even give them a chance.  she ran a stop sign and the other driver honked and she could not hear.  dinged her front end and she has no collision.

I personally think this should be grounds for having your license revoked.  What if she would have hit and killed someone?  It is too late after the fact.

If it's a money issue, hearing aids have come a long way in that respect.  I got mine at Costco for $1,500 for the pair.  My sister in law answered one of the ads in an AARP mailing and got a pair for $500.  Both of us are very happy with our aids.  No need to pay a fortune for them.  If vanity is an issue, they are so small today that they just seem to blend in.  Give it a try, you will be so surprised to hear what you have been missing.  I know when I walked out of Costco with my new aids I was amazed that the wheels on their shopping carts made noise lol.

Why postpone the inevitable? Get them now and enjoy an improved quality of life. Putting it off makes no sense. You might be surprised by what all you have been missing.

My brother who lives in a boarding home and is on disability would love a new hearing aid. Medicare will not pay for real hearing aids.  His cost nearly 4,000, and because of his mental illness he breaks them or looses them.

   @halfpint1

I often chat with a dear neighbour who also lives alone now. There are days when she doesn't have her hearing aide in, or has it turned so low I have to raise my voice and repeat myself to have a casual conversation with her.

Since she can't hear herself properly, she's shouting too! The problem is that everyone else nearby can hear both of us just fine!

I don't care to have a conversation standing 3' from someone, and have them loud, in my face.

One day someone came to their front door to ask us to stop shouting. Windows were open and they could hear both of us inside at the far end of their house.

Our last conversation was in my driveway, and my next door neighbour slammed her window shut.

When my friend doesn't have her hearing aide in, or turned up, it makes me want to immediately end our usual friendly chat.

Hearing loss tends to isolate people. Please take your Doctor's advice.
