@ALRATIBAwrote:No .. I can't think of any time I asked any doctor to do any tests.
My PCP actually told me I'm better off avoiding doctors.

If I had any real relationship with this md I’d give him the opportunity to explain his statement/attitude, if not, and I could change mds I would.

I started asking my PCP for lipid panel readings back in the 1960's. Back then my 350 cholesterol reading fell in the "normal range". That is when I set out on learning more about health and human physiology.
My Cardiologist? I don't need to ask him for a lipid panel as I get one every year, more often after all of my many heart/lung/colon, and other serious health issues. Right now, since I have been healthy of over a year, I have regained my top physical fitness, and that plays a big role in keeping my HDL numbers higher.
So to your question. YES, I did ask my PCP for a lip panel in the 1960's, but my Cardiologist always keeps me current without my having to ask him. If you don't want him as your heart doctor? Find one you like better.

Doctors now a days are required to play within the regulations of the insurance co. They can't just order anything you want or they want, because the insurance will deny it and want them to show reason why it was needed. This is a huge frustration for doctors now. How would you like it if he ordered something just because the patient wanted it done and next thing you know - it is denied and you, the patient, have to pay the full amount ? Then you'd be in the poor docs face whining about what it cost.

My DH sees a cardiologist and an endocrinologist. His endocrinologist runs blood work on him every 3 months to test his A1C and once a year total bloodwork is run including a lipid panel. That information is very important to an endocrinologist. The results are then transmitted to his cardiologist and his PCP.
I am seen yearly by my PCP for an annual check-up/physical. My yearly exam includes complete bloodwork which means a lipid panel. My DH's insurance will not pay for a lipid panel for anyone other than the employee so I have to pay for that portion of the bloodwork out of my pocket and that is normally close to $200.00.

No, I have my PCP run tests like that and have her forward any necessary results to the relevant specialists, not the other way around.

@puttypiesmom I have a blood panel every year done through my primary care doctor, and everything is entered into their computer so all doctors connected to a patient can view the results.
I was seeing a new doctor and he was looking at the comouter and asked me if I had had have a brain x-ray/CT, I said yes, ten years ago, so my entire history for over thirty years is in their computer.

My husband's cardiologist orders blood work 1x a year for him.

Physicians don't order tests because they are curious or because the patient wants it. Obviously, your cardiologist didn't need it for treatment purposes. You probably should have asked your pcp to run it since it's just to satisfy your curiosity. Having said that, he could have complied and he might have if you had a conversation about it and asked him for it. There a 1000 things that COULD affect your heart...lol That doesn't mean your cardiologist needs them all to treat or even diagnose a patient. You didn't commit a faux pas but you failed to have an acutal conversation about it.

@puttypiesmomwrote:For a lipid panel? Apparently I committed a terrible faux pas. My cardio man told me he's not a primary care physician. I really thought a lipid panel would be of interest to my cardio doctor as it's kind of related to the heart, do you think? It's not like I was asking a proctologist for a lipid panel. I think I don't want to be his patient anymore.
I would not go back to that cardiologist. I find a lot of specialists in the U.S. have a horrible stuck up attitude especially with women. I received care in Europe many years and so many physicians in the U.S. are terrible. So many have a God complex and since I help pay their life style I will not tolerate to be treated like a moron. I have fired several.
