Re: Has anyone else given up the scale?

OP, I could have written your post. LOL. I've discovered, as many of us have, that our weight shifts as we age. Thus, the scale means nothing to me. If I look good (as possible) in my clothes, then so be it.

Just for me, it is a tool to keep me honest.

No sooner did I post on here, and within days, went back to WW. I'm happy I did. I like the visiting with others and fellow support you get. It just feels right.

Re: Has anyone else given up the scale?

If I notice my pants are getting tight, I weigh myself. I am no longer obsessed with the scale because if I gain a pound, it used to depress me. I like being thin, so I just eat to stay that way. One day, though, of eating poorly doesn't register. It is a week before I see a difference and when I do, I fast for 24 hours and then the next day go back to good habits. It works best for me.

Re: Has anyone else given up the scale?

I gave up the scale years ago when I started lifting weights. It was no longer an accurate gauge of my fitness or weight.

Re: Has anyone else given up the scale?

I'm a firm believer that a scale in the house is doom. Weighing yourself daily, or even weekly and not seeing the results you are striving for, is just defeating.

Not weighing is not about denial, it is about looking beyond some number. We all know how we feel, how the clothing is fitting, how well we are able to move etc. That is a better indicator and less defeating that that 1 pound weight loss after working hard.

When I am in a weight loss pattern, I find it more helpful to get on a scale maybe once a month, and enjoy some real results, rather than beat myself up daily or weekly for seeing so little change.

I have to keep myself in check. I am not obsessive but have to keep a visit a couple of times a week.

Re: Has anyone else given up the scale?

I weigh once or twice a week, just to keep a handle on my weight as I have had weight issues in the past. Over the holidays, I gained 3 pounds, it did not show up until the middle of January though. At this point have lost about half of what I gained over the holiday.

A Farewell to Your Shackles

By MARGARITA TARTAKOVSKY, MS

You are a small, unsophisticated machine

simplistic in your function.

And yet

you rule my moods

dictate my diet

and overshadow the joys in my life.

And yet

you are an earthquake

shattering the walls

the glass

of my home

every time

the number spikes.

Because every time

the number spikes

suddenly I’m

incompetent

stupid

a slob

worthless

disgusting.

Lately, I’ve been wondering

why do I even need you?

So I’ve decided to let you go.

No hard feelings.

I don’t want

to feel restricted

rejected

inherently wrong.

In fact, all you do

is whisper lies.

So I’m giving

both of us

the gift

of freedom.

Because I am ready

to rise

no shackles

for my wings

no muzzle

for my beak.

Re: Has anyone else given up the scale?

For me, to give up the scale, is to give up on weight control.
