Re: Has Anyone Ever Experienced a Strange Symptom

@makena  I completely empathize with your misery.  A Summer a few years ago was ruined by the sudden onset of unexplained and uncontrollable itching.  I learned pollen count from maple and mulberry trees was off the charts that year, and we had both those trees around the perimeter of our house.  Whatever the cause, it was enough to drive me to the brink of tears.

The only thing that gave me (temporary) relief was tub soaks in colloidal oatmeal.  Aveeno makes a good one.

I sincerely hope the situation rapidly improves for you.

Now that you mention it, I have indeed had itchy skin from pollen, but normally hands and arms - exposed areas.

Kidney failure causes itching, I would go to the ER and have them do a urinalysis and blood work.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Experienced a Strange Symptom

I had this same exact thing happen to me years ago.  I woke up in the night with incredible itching on my arms, legs, I think the trunk of my body also.  It was awful, and I couldn't see any cause...no hives, no rash.

It did go away, though, it didn't last until morning, and did not return.  I will never know what caused it, so I'm really not of any help to you.  Obviously, had it continued I would have had to see a doctor.

Sometimes the body just has strange reactions to things.  I've had scarier things happen to me than this itching, and most times the symptoms go away on their own.

I can't wait until I go home and rip my clothes off so I can scratch it.  It's seriously driving me crazy.  It's mostly my stomach, under my arms and back.  Once in a while my scalp feels itchy too.

That could be soap, softener, something sprayed on - something topical. But it also seems systemic enough that it could also be an allergy to something eaten or otherwise ingested - pills, food, whatever.

The doctor would probably tell you to visit them, or Urgent Care/ER if you do develop hives or have ANY trouble breathing.

You can buy OTC cortisone creams but what the doctor would prescribe would be stronger.

Just thought of something - once you're in a situation where it won't matter if you're sleepy - not driving, in traffic - take a couple of Benadryl. That is the FIRST thing even an ER would give you. If it helps, it's an allergy of SOME kind.

Since this just "popped up" in the OP, I would imagine she would have some forewarning symptoms if she had any issues with her kidneys.

One doesn't walk into an ER and request that they do a UA and blood work for kidney failure, when simply presenting with itching. They might or might not do any lab work at all, and would most likely pat her on the head and send her home with Benadryl. It's far more likely to be some type of allergy than anything else, especially in the absense of any other symptoms.

Its sounds like some type of allergic reaction.  Could be caused by many things.  Something you ate, new bed sheets, pj's, bath soap, lotion.  Also  could be caused by nerves, stress.  Buy some over the counter hydrocortisone cream and rub it all over.  It also could be caused by any medication you might be taking including over the counter stuff.

@Imaoldhippie

Using hydrocortisone cream on large areas of the body is not recommended.  See a doctor.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Experienced a Strange Symptom

I don't go to the doctor with a "strange" symptom. I wait a few days, doing baths or topical first. Many times it disappears in a few days, whereas if you go to the doctor, they'll send you to all kind of specialists and tests that go on and don't discover anything. It goes away and nobody discovered anything.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Experienced a Strange Symptom

We had an outbreak of the itchies at our house and I finally figured out I had tried some new free sample pod detergent on a load of towels and sheets in the laundry. Never again with the pods. Back to my Tide. (and had to rewash all the offenders). Any new laundry products at your house?
