Highlights:

One in three Americans had previously been diagnosed with the condition, but now 14% more Americans will be diagnosed with high blood pressure. The new guidelines will classify 103.3 million people as having high blood pressure, while the previous guidelines placed only 72.2 million Americans in this category, according to the authors of the report.

High blood pressure should be treated at 130/80 rather than 140/90, according to the new parameters set forth by the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and nine other health professional organizations.

The new guidelines define normal as less than 120/80. When systolic pressure (the first number) is between 130 and 139 or diastolic (the second number) is between 80 and 89, this will be referred to as Stage 1 hypertension. Stage 2 is when systolic is at least 140 or diastolic is at least 90.

The new guidelines eliminate the category of prehypertension, which was used for systolic readings between 120 and 139 or diastolic numbers between 80 and 89.

The new guidelines put blood pressure readings in five different categories:

• Normal. Less than 120/80.
• Elevated.
A top number between 120 and 129 or a bottom number less than 80.
• Stage 1.
A top number between 130 and 139 or a bottom number between 80 and 89.
• Stage 2.
A top number of 140 or higher and a bottom number of at least 90.
• Hypertensive crisis.
A top number over 180 or a bottom number over 120.

My BP, from Nov. 1st was 120/75.  According to the new guidelines my BP would be classified as Elevated.  WOW

In my opinion, just another way to push more drugs on more people.

At most offices, they don’t even take BP correctly & that causes many people to be misdiagnosed.

High blood pressure is nothing to play around with, or to ignore

I hope people take it seriously. It can kill ,or maim you, cause a form of dementia ,and destroy your ability to speak,  or  freely move your body

I'm glad they  did this. It might help save lives

So you agree with telling someone that is 64 years old and has always had a reading of 120/80 that all of sudden they are in the elevated range?

I stand by my opinion...

I agree with it. It doesn't mean they will put you on any medication, but ,we all need to be mindful of things like this

I lost two family members to strokes. All my siblings have HBP ,I do not. But I will take it more seriously ,and keep track of mine, better than I do now
