Additionally, while I am well aware that this is anecdotal, over the past 5 years, I have known 10 people (friends, family) who had strokes.  Every one was on a statin drug and had been for years.  I have known 4 people who had heart attacks.

I don't know anyone who had a stroke or heart attack  who wasn't on statins.

This does not give me a lot of confidence.

Guess bottom line is that some like to blindly follow their trusted doctors, while others prefer to research other options.  As stated medical protocols change, hopefully your doctor keeps up on those changes.  Also need to consider who is doing the research studies.  Studies performed or backed by pharmaceutical companies, who have a financial interest in the results, should be scrutinized.  Unfortunately anyone who questions something or "bucks the party line" is labeled a kook, society has just turned into a bunch of bullies.

Someday, when scientists discover the center of the Universe....some people will be disappointed it is not them.

Re: HUGE NEWS on statins...

[ Edited ]

@Susan Louise  Why do your feel sorry for those taking Statins? I am a RN x 44 years and have seen that statins save lives. I have been on Crestor for years, My original cholesterol was almost 200 but now 120. That is a great cholesterol level. I have no side effects.

The silent killers that people often ignore are in no particular order. 1. High Cholesterol, contributes to heart disease, enlarged heart, heart failure, strokes. 2. Hypertension, same as high cholesterol. Diabetes contributes to all of the above.

People need to get their labs done at least 1 x per year to screen for these things, see their MD at least 1 x per year.

I have seen so many young folks, age 50's who have suffered from heart, vascular issues, strokes.

Read the research and listen to your doctors. Prevention is the key to our health, and statins are a tool in our arsenal to help us.

Medications are a modern miracle that we should take advantage of.

For those that think that high cholesterol does not cause heart disease, think again. The narrowing of the arteries, veins in the vascular system cause the heart to to pump harder than is should, cause the heart to enlarge and not function properly, the heart fails, causing heart failure.

I have taken care of hundreds of heart failure patients and will do anything in my power to prevent this horrible disease.

I find people who "self treat", ignore their health and MD advice often end up in bad medical situations.

@catter70

Would you mind sharing what you are taking?  I recently began having horrible muscle/ joint aches.  I have been taking rosuvastatin (generic Crestor) for about a year.  Recently my pharmacy filled it from a different maker and I feel terrible.  As I research this I see that there are petitions this year urging the FDA to ban this drug.  This one may not be for me!

@bettinanne , My doctor prescribed Ezetimibe (Zetia) 10 mg. Of course, what works for me may not work for you, but this has no statins. Check with your doc.

@I am still oxox  Don't put all your faith in Doctors, and trust what your common sense and body tells you. Too many of them are out to make money at all costs and over prescribe dangerous drugs instead of finding the root cause of the problem. That's not to say that pharma drugs are not necessary at times. I have been on the receiving end of this too many times and I have learned my lessson. I have learned to be my own best health care advocate and take medical advice with a grain of salt.

The healthiest people I have known and those that lived the longest were on few if any pharma drugs. In contrast, those on several, were the ones with the most health problems. I have worked in the medical field for MD Eye Doctors for many many years and have seen it firsthand many times. One should always do their due diligence and research what you are putting into your body. The saying, "the cure is worse than the disease" was coined for a reason.
