Re: Grief/do any meds help with it?

@newjersey,

I urge you to at least stay receptive to taking an anti depressant, if your doctor mentions that as an option after you talk with him.

If you are extremely anxious/nervous, jittery, crying a lot, can’t sleep, can’t focus your thoughts on anything beyond what happened, feel ready to pull your hair out or throw a screaming fit, and don’t seem to be able to move forward, an anti depressant can help.   The goal is to calm the anxiety, and as that happens with use of a daily medication, you reach a more stable place in order to look at things a little differently, and therefore start processing your grief.   This stage is when a therapist or Grief Share program is really helpful.

Best wishes to you.

@TeddieYou never know.  What you have experienced might help the OP or someone else.  Don't be afraid to share.

@Linmo  My issue was not the same as the OP.  I wrote about my discouraging and unsuccessful search for help but decided there was no point. Thank you very much for being so kind.

Re: Grief/do any meds help with it?

@TeddieWhen one of my children needed help as a teenager, I had a heck of a time finding someone to help her.  All of the doctors in our insurance network were either filled up or had long waiting lists.  We ended up to go outside of our network, but it was definitely worth the extra cost.  I think that more people are seeking help for mental issues, which is good, but there seems to be a shortage of specialists in mental health fields, at least in my community.

Re: Grief/do any meds help with it?

When my hubby, my soulmate graduated to Heaven I was in really bad shape and in a dangerous dark place. My GP put me on anti anxiety meds which helped a little. I then went to counseling and a grief share group which also helped because you get strategies to help. I also believe in God and that I will

someday be reunited with my hubby.  I was given a Max Lucado book, “ You will Get Through This”, and I would read myself to sleep. During the day stay very busy, get out join others even if that is the last thing you feel like doing. My prayers are with you that you find peace and comfort.  I can assure you it gets better, the waves become less and less frequent until there is only a rippple.

Re: Grief/do any meds help with it?

Thoughts and prayers to you that you can find the strength to manage the grief you are experiencing.  It's only natural to greive over the loss of someone or a situation  that has meant so much to you, but grief just like all other feelings becomes a problem if it leads to anxiety and depression and consumes your every waking moment as you described.  I had a very hard time getting over the loss of my Dad, but I have accepted this loss in my heart and will always hold him close in my thoughts but it didn't happen overnight I cried alot and just couldn't believe my Dad was gone. I started to miss work and basically not care about much.  I finally sought help from my Pastor who really made me feel much better, I sought his guidance often.  I  also spoke to my Primary MD who was wonderful and sympathetic, which was very comforting and she found a great grief support group for me to attend and I realized then that their were others who felt just as emotionally drained like me. They cared and most importantly listened and gave me their advice and kindness.  Time has softened this grief and my grief has become beautiful memories of my time I had with my Dad.  Don't let your grief consume your every waking moment, seek help from your MD, they can help direct you to the wonderful greif support groups that are out there and if you have a religious faith seek help with the Pastor, but don't suffer alone help is out their my friend.

@Linmo  It sounds like you’ve gone through some concerning times. I sincerely hope she is doing okay now. Blessings to you and your family.

Thanks for the replies. I have no one to talk to about this - no one is interested so is it ok if I come here? I've been thinking about my situation and I have an appt. this week to see a doctor (not a psychiatrist, just my regular PC doctor), but I don't see how meds will work.   But I'll try them. I think I'm gonna have to do this on my own.   In other words, ride it out.

@newjersey I strongly suggest you see a psychiatrist for this. Sometimes it takes a mixture of drugs or the first one you try is not working for you. Only a good psychiatrist will know which direction to go. A good PC will not treat in an area they do not have experience.
