What a nice bunch of honest replies about our stage in life.  I really appreciate the varied and honest replies in this blog.  Just today, I prepared a note for a friend who is turning 70 next week and included this verse from Psalm 90:10 for her:

“The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.”

As we hit this age, we can know we have a target and then … another one.  And our job is to stay strong.

What I have learned is that there are no guarantees in life but keeping our bodies moving every day really helps.  I’m surprised that QVC has never brought its customers a rebounder like what you might find from Needak but 15 minutes on this everyday has kept me strong.  NASA actually brought us the technology to keep the astronauts strong when they were in space.  Yet, whatever we choose to do, we need to keep moving to stay strong.

And we need to hear encouragement from other folks who are willing to speak about aging which we are hearing from this blog.  It is kind of sad that our society doesn’t appreciate those who are aging like others do in other countries but this was nice to read all of the replies.  Thank you all for your thoughts

@nevergivesup @violann They say that some are left with long term symptons that are just like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. My heart goes out to your niece @nevergivesup and to you Violann, I have CFS which is now called. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and it is a living H***. So getting old and having this is not pretty. I've had it since 1987.

Unless there is a misalignment or some other structural problem with the knees, wearing out from "overuse" is not a medical fact.

I am talking about those with "Knock Knees or Bowlegs", which greatly effect the normal function of the knee joint. Injuries? Of course that falls under "injury", not "wear".

If everyone kept their VMO muscle group, along with their quadriceps muscles strong and flexible, Orthopedic Surgeons, like my good friend, would be doing a whole lot fewer knee repairs and replacements.

Once again "the human body rusts out from lack of use". It does not "wear out from overuse". Serious injuries from a "football/baseball/basketball/tennis/soccer/hockey, and so on, is not considered "normal wear and tear". That is called "abuse" of the joint, not "wear".

Ah! Now I feel good and at 82 my knees are doing just fine in spite of running over 300,000 miles/playing hundreds of ice hockey games, and being an ice hockey Referee for over 30 years(well over 1,000 games). Why? Because I took good care of them, that is considered(called), "USE"!

Thank you@cactusgal for your kind wishes. I can’t imagine suffering with this condition for over 30 years as you have. It must have changed the whole course of your life. We can never really know what burden another person is carrying. I wish you all the best.

@nevergivesup - thinking often of your niece, and hoping she finds answers, maybe even one by one, until her symptoms ease and she is able to resume her previously energy filled life.

@hckynut , Your post makes sense, I never understood how muscles could wear out from overuse when I've always heard the opposite: they "rust' from lack of use.

BTW,  I've thought that there are many hip and knee replacements that aren't necessary when other alternatives could work instead. I realize that sometimes replacements are needed, but it seems that they are promoted no matter what. Something like this should get a second opinion IMO. Maybe I'm off with thinking this, but it's what I've observed.

My son (age 37) is bedbound with severe ME/CFS.  So sorry to hear that you're dealing with this miserable disease, too!

@hckynut my older brother, 87, says it simply: REST and RUST! Keep moving is the secret. If you keep moving, you can fool your body into thinking you're young again! It's being said now that "sitting" is the new smoking.

No matter how long I live, I want them to be quality years. No one wants to live a long time in pain and misery. Movement even helps brain activity. No one wants to live a long life in misery.

Be thankful each morning, and move whatever you are able to. A little every day will help. God bless you all!

@febe1

I agree with all your older brother has said. We are singing the same song, just a different verse.

Thank you and your brother for your input,

I am just going to add that having some not so good genetics plays  a big part in how we age. Things we were never told about and what it feels like or how it affects the qualaity of our lives.

I know this, I can feel it all. Some things just can't be told to go away even through exercise and good nutrition. I am 68 and going to be 69 sooner than I'd like, but one thing I am grateful for is that I am still here.

There are mornings it's so hard to even get out of bed, but I do. Also I feel like I can't even get in the shower, but I do. There are times I don't even think I can make another meal, but I do. Aging is not easy no matter what your number is. Good Health is a Blessing and some have an abundance and others like me have more struggles than we wish.

Did I ever think this was going to be my golden years? No, I never thought about getting "old" but now that I am here, man do I think about it a lot. Ce'la'vie'
