I read all over the net about probiotics and how they help with gerd. So i ask my familly dr recently and he says nope, no help. Makes me wonder if what he says is true or if the drs get money from meds they push?

@FlowerBear---drs. tend to not like anything alternative for these things--would rather push the other stuff. Try it for a month or so--but you need to take BILLIONS of live cultures--like 50 billlion. I take these when I take antibiotics to help prevent yeast infections. also look into prebiotics as well.

@FlowerBear I also have trouble with GERD as I've gotten older. I only use antacids for it when I need them, but I have noticed when I eat my yogurt for breakfast and lunch, I rarely have a reaction. So, it may be more a matter of certain foods that aren't GERD triggers, rather than them being cures for it.

I too have noticed a bit of acid stomach the last couple of years.... I cut back on my coffee and use half coffee and half coffee substitute made from grains...... I also use natural antacid chews supplements when I feel I need something. They work just fine. Mostly calcium carbonate.

@FlowerBear DH & I both take digestive enzymes & a probiotic every day. All I can say is that together with a healthier diet & excercise we are doing very well. We believe that the probiotic ( Andrew Lessman's Ultimate Friendly Flora), has done wonders for us.

Have to kinda agree with the doc.
GERD is ‘further up food chain.’
Probiotics help the gut...GERD is more stomach/above.
And all this can be fixed with a simple change in diet/lifestyle.
Fix the cause not the symptom.

Your doctor is right and there are plenty of over the counter medications available to treat GERD, so not sure why you think your doctor is getting paid off for telling people to take the appropriate medication for the problem.

@FlowerBear Doctors do NOT get money from medications that they prescribe. I am 100% certain of this.

You are so WRONG it is not that simple to cure GERD. I tried everything under the sun diet wise to cure it and it did not get cured. Some things helped a bit but diet does not cure it for all people. Stop making such ridiculous generalizations. Everyone's cause of GERD can be totally different. There are a lot of tests that need to be done by a doctor, and even then they usually have no cause or answer for you. I have had all the tests done you can imagine, got no answers.
In response to the OP, I did probiotics for years and it was no help for my GERD. I recently quit them and if anything I feel better and my GERD is really starting to go away (on no meds now). I have read that probiotics can cause more harm and not good. You never know. It's a complex system.

You are so right!
"Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach."
Some foods can trigger it, not cause it!
Age itself can weaken the LES!
