I have osteopenia and took it for years. No side effects and have had extensive dental work post-taking it. I do not need to take it anymore due to weight loss and eating better and exercise.

Update....been on the generic fosamax for 3 weeks and not with good results.  Feet swelled so bad could hardly fit in shoes, had general mild body joint pain, severe joint pain in the wrist area between thumb and index finger.....so bad have to wear a brace.  Called doctor and was advised to stop the med immediately and see if that resolves the problems as it may be an allergic reaction and get back.  Worst med ever had!  Now wondering what any alternate would be.....guess that the next conversation with the doctor.

@pattyc

I am so sorry to hear you had such a severe reaction.  I posted above that mine was bad, but not as bad as yours.  The pain was relentless in my hips, and, since nothing had changed, I knew it was the problem.

It took at least 3 weeks to fully subside, but it did.

I hope the same for you.  I just stopped taking it and haven't consulted about what, if anything, will replace it.

With such a negative experience, I am reluctant to try shots!

Please keep us posted.

The doctor gave me Boniva once per month pill.  It was awful for me.

I took the pill according to directions.  In the middle of my chest, it felt like the pill was stuck and was burning so badly as if on fire.

I went back to the doctor two separate times and asked if there was an anecdote for Boniva as I couldn't stand the burning any longer.

He said I just had to wait until it wore off and not take again.

At the end of 30 days, the horrible burning subsided.

I don't take anything now except D3 daily.
