Garlic - Are You Allergic ??

I am. Was not always. Had fish the other night and did not know the sauce had garlic...my heart went so fast I almost passed out. I have a ritual to attempt to stop it but it takes about an hour or so and takes a lot out of me the following day too. I get so sick to my stomach. Cucumbers too. Just wondered it you have a bad reaction.

Honestly, I read things like this and I think it's a joke because it's so incredibly outlandish.  If you suspect you are have such a severe allergic reaction to some foods, I urge you to take it seriously.  Make a list of the foods that affect you and how they affect you and then make an appoint to see your physician for an exam and then a referral to an allergist.  In the intermim,  STOP eating the foods you think you are allergic too.  Although those symptoms don't strike me as food allergies.  See your doctor.

I don't know what I'd do if I was allergic to garlic. I LOVE garlic. I put it, and large quantities, in everything I make! OP. have you been tested to see if garlic is the culprit?

Re: Garlic - Are You Allergic ??

Since about age 4 I have suffered with food allergies and food sensitivities.

Food allergies- life threatening and easy to diagnosis.  I have to carry an epi pen.

Food sensitivities (which sound like the OP has) are very problematic, are terrible for your health and are hard to diagnosis.  Traditional food allergy tests will not help with sensitivities.

Yes, I have a sibling who is highly allergic to garlic. Confirmed by a physician. The allergy developed in adulthood. The person becomes extremely ill for days when exposed.

I stay away from garlic and onions because I am basically on a Fodmap diet. I do get sick on both if I eat them...especially raw. Last week I ate some cooked onions in a salad from Panera and was sick all day. I keep thinking maybe I can eat them some day but every time I try I get sick.

What kind of fish did you eat @cbrite ? If it was shellfish, sometimes that can really give people issues.

Feel better and check with your allergist what to do if it ever happens again. Feel better!

It’s going to be tough to avoid garlic because manufacturers are not required to list garlic as a separate ingredient in foods. They can just list “spices” and they do not have to specify garlic. Only the most common allergens are specifically listed as required by the FDA. You might need to see an allergist and get an Epipen or it’s eqivalent.
