I've never known of a ganglion cyst to be painful. I had one removed from my wrist when I was in nursing school but it was just big and ugly so I wanted it gone before my wedding.

I would recommend an orthopedic hand surgeon not a plastic surgeon!!!

I had a painful one on my wrist years ago, it was there for a few months, then suddenly it disappeared on its own, never to return.

Remember the old Bible cure, just hit it hard with the Bible!!!

I had one on top of one wrist ages ago, someone hit it with a large book and it went away never to return. Don't know why so many seem to be mentioned around the wrist area. ?? Curious. But same thing as Shelbelle for mine too.

Hello all my well informed friends - has any one had experience with ganglion cysts, I have several of the on the knuckles on my right hand, they are the result of a fall last Spring, I brace my fall with my hand and they are a result of trauma. They are painful and hurt when I bend my hand thanks all

 Thanks in advance

You could make an appointment with an orthopedic hand specialist.  I went to Anderson Clinic in Arlington for surgery on my hand.  Their guy--Dr. Jeffrey L. Lovallo, 703-769-8430--is the best.  You might ask him about aspirating the ganglia (they are fluid filled) first to help with the pain and maybe prevent surgery.  Best of luck!!

I had one near the ankle. The orthopedist aspirated it on the chance it might not come back. It never did. I also had one on my palm and as it grew it was becoming a danger to nerves in my hand. A plastic surgeon removed it with no further problems.

You DO NOT need a plastic surgeon. I just had my hand done last week, getting the stitches out in the morning. Mine was done by aan orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand surgeries. The tendons can be moved temporarily as does the cartilage. Most ganglion cysts are not very deep. I had bone spurs, large ones, all up and down the length of my finger. Hubby saw same doctor for multiple hand ganglion cysts. She shot him with cortisone for now, but said she would do surgery if the ever really made him suffer terribly.

She stated she does about 6 surgeries every day of the week because ganglion cysts are so prevalent. They  tend to run in families.
