Ford - I would not worry about your cholesterol levels either. I'm sure you have done a lot of research on the subject. I have.

Between money hungry drug companies & doctors who are not up on current facts, there is a lot of bad info out there, not to mention bad medical practices. We all need to be proactive. no one else is going to look out for our health as well as we can. No one else cares as much.

I'm 64 yrs. old. When I think of children with cancer and all the people who have died in their 30's, 40,s and 50's, I actually feel that living to this age should make me thankful. I am thankful for every year, but, like you, Ford.....were all going to die from something...so you just do what you are comfortable with and live to the fullest while you can. I am not afraid to die. I hope it's quietly and in my sleep though!

I just came from my yearly GYN checkup. I mentioned Fosamax to my doc, she said she does not like it, and there are much better options out there.

I actually did take a statin for a similarly high reading (256) in my 50s when going through menopause. It did reduce my total number, but also reduced my always excellent HDL number, which is why I stopped taking it then. Plus I did have pain as a side effect and I didn't have RA at that time. All the new findings since then have only reinforced my resistance to statin drugs.

There are other drugs I won't take either, but I won't go into them. It amazes me how many brand new drugs are being advertised on TV now with the funkiest names for the most minor of afflictions. I'm sure if I "asked my doctor," she won't even have heard of them.
