There are mainly 4 levels and it is all dependent on how low you choose to keep your carb level. The biggest determining factor for most is how strong one's insulin resistance is...how high their blood sugar level is.
Some folks can keep their blood sugar levels in the normal range by just eating low carb. Others have to drop their carb count down further.
When DH and I started a low carb/keto lifestyle back in September of 2018, our daily carb count averaged about 60-70. After over 3 years, we currently average 20-30 daily...maybe around 30-40 once week...but that is rare nowadays.
About every 6 months we adjusted our carb count down another 10 carbs...so it was a process, not all at once.
DH was diagnosed as a type-2 diabetic in September 2018. I knew I was pre-diabetic at the time and headed down the same road. The day of his diagnosis we cleared our our pantry freezer and fridge. We haven't regretted or looked back since.
Our blood sugar levels are now normal. DH is off of both of his diabetic meds...
Life is good. ![]()
I found a great video for those who want to learn about this lifestyle. It is an hour long and I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the information. I made several changes in my diet which has included a Keto lifestyle and learned to adjust. I just posted about the Keto cups which I love because I love chocolate so it helps my need for chocolate. My A1C is down to 5.5 per my last MD visit 3 weeks ago.

@Susan Louise Thanks! I plan on watching the video. I've been wanting to go low carb and can do it for a few days at a time but then my cravings get the best of me and I can't stick with it.
My blood sugar level is in a noraml range and I want to do it to just be healthier and lose some weight. I'm hoping that the video give tips on how to stay with it and get through cravings.

@haddon9 I recommend following Dr Becky, Dr Berg and Dr Ken Berry on youtube. They all have great info on the subject and many other health issues related.
Below is a title to one from Dr Becky you can watch after the other video
How to Stop Eating Sugar: 5 SIMPLE Steps to Get Control

@Susan Louise @Goodie2shoes Thanks for the link, I will look for it. Like @Goodie2shoes I also made dietary changes this past spring and my A1C was also 5.5 last week when I had labs done (good work Goodie2shoes!!). I just kind of winged it, kept low carb, and cut out all processed food. Did join my family for pizza on Friday nights tho. My question to you both is how exactly do you keep track of carbs when it's a homemade recipe? How do you maintain weight (stop losing weight) and still stay low carb? I don't want to keep losing weight, my clothes are too big but I want to continue with this eating plan. Thanks for any suggestions

@haddon9 and others who would be interested, If you google any of these 3 Dr's (Dr Becky, Dr Berg and Dr Ken Berry), they all have several very informative videos on youtube about sugar.
This is one of Dr Berg's latest...the sarcasm is spot on...love all the comments below it too...LOL!

@RooRoo I didn't post a link...just the title for folks to google for themselves.
I think you are a bit confused on how to cut carbs. You said you cut out processed foods...but you still could be easily eating lots of carbs/sugar. It sounds like you were just eating 'cleaner', but not actually a low carb lifestyle.
For example, that homemade pizza you ate no doubt was very high carbs (starches & grains turn into sugar) just based upon the crust alone...unless you already knew about how to make a low carb/keto version with different ingredients. But that couldn't be the case since you seem unfamiliar about how to count carbs.
Of coarse you can lose weight eating that type of diet - 'cleaner' food choices...but it is not the same.
For example, fruit juices and many fruits are VERY high in carbs/sugars. A glass of fruit juice or a smoothie is like drinking a glass of sugar. DH and I still eat fruit...but we are very restrictive...only certain berries, a shared apple or a shared Cutie serving (1 serving is 2 Cuties)...that is the extent of our fruits...and absolutely no fruit juices or smoothies!
We only have fruit once or twice a week and we have to configure our menu accordingly for those 'treats'. A single Cutie/clementine has 9 carbs...so that is about 1/3 to 1/2 of our carb load for a single day!
There is lots of info/lists online about high carb foods and what they are...sugar, pasta, grains, starches in veggies like potatos & corn. Many other veggies like leafy greens are great for nutrition...like kale, spinach & romaine and they are very low carb.
Again, there is so much info online on how to keep track of carbs/sugars and to help get you started...
You can lower your A1C even further if you actually ate low carb/keto.
