Re: For my diabetic buddies!

Unfortunately, when I was first on insulin level it and humankind I was very allergic to it and had many reactions. When I discussed it with her she said to just keep on taking it and increase my dosage but two units every third day. I still had many reactions and c continued to complain. After two months on this combo she finally washed her ears out and listened to my complaints. She state oh you must be one in a hundred that has reactions. Duh. Haven't you been listening to me. She changed my meds to Lantos and humalog but at a higher dosage as the old ones. I was crashing all the time and calling them continually decreasing my dose or as she told me to eat more. Need I say more. She never gave me the guidelines to calculate insulin dosage. I have complained to my doctor but being in an hmo type facility he is instructed to refer me back to the diabetic nurse educator. I don't feel like going through this hassle all over again. I have looked through everything printed and she never gave me any information on this issue. I feel like I'm on a merry go round. That is why I am asking. What should have been easy logical data just never happened. She told me in my last emergency that if I didn't see her in six months I am no longer on her patient list.

I posted about this link because I found it to be so helpful to newbies. I had NO idea that some are so filled with hate, they have to vent it when someone is asking for help, or a website thats not only informative, but a positive place. Who says diabetics can't be uplifted? The girls that posted on my other thread really helped and I found them uplifting!! Go post your hate somewhere else!

Thank you for posting about this site and I will check it out. We can all use some "uplifting" from time to time. Too bad this board has so many "haters." It's always interesting to read of someone else's experience and tips, etc.

When you say reactions do you mean hypoglycemic incidents? Or do you mean that you had rashes from the insulin itself? If you are taking too much insulin at incorrect dosages, you will suffer from hypoglycemia.

Are you seeing a regular internist or an endocrinologist? An endocrinologist will usually be a lot more versed on different treatment plans than an internist.

Hang in there... There is a learning curve with insulin.

Nagrom, I am so happy that I could help you. It isn't easy in the beginning but you will get the hang of it. After awhile you will feel very confident on how to control your diabetes. Just takes a bit of time...Smile

Remember though that everyone is different. I am not dispensing medical advice because I am just a lay person with diabetes. Always check with your physician and let her review your history, treatment plan and A1c results.

Re: For my diabetic buddies!

Serenity I was actually physically sick -nauseous, vomiting and sometimes dizzy. I would try to go for a thirty minute walk and throw up after ten minutes. Get sweaty and have low Bs. Not a fun thing! She just kept telling me to keep on the same insulin until after two Months this she thought I was reactive to it. Ya think? I have history of allergy to metformin and one other they briefly tried. Allergy history from child on...having allergy shots three times in my life. First time for eight years, second time for three years and third time eight months and had to quit as maintenance could not be reached. Have asthma so that about rounds out sensitivity.

It sounds like you were put on too high a dosage and it needed to be tapered down.

Reading your posts it sounds like you need a specialist to adjust your meds. Can you see an endocrinologist and get a referral from your primary care physician?

Your insulin needs may be dependent upon how controlled your asthma is, so you present with a more difficult case. That's where a specialist in diabetes would probably really make a difference in helping you to feel better.

Re: For my diabetic buddies!

I have tapered down on my own and in the medical group I belong to the doctor has to refer me to see an endocrinologist. Under the diabetic nurse I was up to 48 units of Lantos and 20 units of humalog. I am down to 28 units of Lantos and between 6-12 units of humalog. Still needing to eat to keep my numbers up and I believe I can lower my units and eat less. I don't like to be so own my own but my A1C have been in the 6 range so they won't refer me. When my numbers are high I work out more and it seems to do the trick. The diabetic nurse encouraged me to eat more. I have more lower numbers than high but would like to even out without spikes or lows.

In my dreams right? I hear so many with uncontrolled diabetes that I don't want to be in that group. Also have had lots of stress in my life. Hubby has had 16 surgeries in the last 4 years for bladder cancer, last two were negative so after the dentist pulls a few capped teeth and his June 2nd cancer look see is good he will have a TKR. I had a complete shoulder replacement surgery last September so recovery went well and everything seems healed normally. My son has a rare condition that I won't mention here but very serious. I am very thankful but there is other diseases in my family that adds to the stress. The stress may have an impact on my highs and lows.
