Re: Foot problems — surgery suggested —

@Hoovermom   LOL...I specifically asked the surgeon I consulted last year whether during all these years (50) the surgery had become "more refined" and he emphatically stated that it DID NOT!  It's the same surgery I had 50 yrs ago; HOWEVER, of course, he pointed out that his skill and expertise would ensure the surgery would be a success!

Re: Foot problems — surgery suggested —

I had this surgery last October. I have had rheumatoid arthritis for 45 years and my feet are very deformed. (I have never worn flip flops) My right big toe took a detour and ended up under my second toe - sounds like yours. I also had a large bone spur off the outside of the big toe. I had the surgery because of the extreme pain when I walked.

The surgery and recovery were relatively easy. I had very little pain following surgery, wore a boot for 8 weeks when I was allowed to drive again. Released from the doctor's care at 12 weeks. I am very happy with the result and happy I had it done.

Only you can make the decision to have surgery, but I don;t think there is any way to fix this problem other than surgery. Good luck!

Re: Foot problems — surgery suggested —

Hi @homedecor1   Please let us know how it goes.  My mother is 92 and has regretted for years not having surgery to correct a condition like the one you describe in the second sentence when she was in her 60s.  I don't know what the condition is exactly, or what the surgery would have entailed.

But she can barely wear any shoes and is in tremendous pain.

My toes are doing weird things and I probably need surgery myself, but can't handle that right now.  I am wearing bigger shoes and inserts to avoid further injury.

My sister had toe surgery years ago, they found arthritis in her joints, and the operated toes are noticeably shorter.  Just mentioning that so that you are aware the appearance might not be good.  She was unhappy with the surgery, but I don't really know if it was pain or just appearance.

You may want to watch "My feet are killing me", they show many foot surgeries.  Many episodes are available on Spectrum on demand, maybe included in Max or Discovery+ not sure.  I think maybe also You Tube.  I think the show is good in terms of setting expectations.

Hope you are well whatever you decide.

Re: Foot problems — surgery suggested —

I haven't had that type of surgery but read many hundreds of the operative reports when I worked in a hospital.  It's not uncommon.   You are probably in pain and footwear must be a problem.  Why would you hesitate?  However I think you should get a second opinion.  Also make a list of all your questions and concerns and get answers.  Suffering with something like this when there's a surgery doesn't make sense to me.

@chrystaltree

Thank you - I'm not in any pain - just uncomfortable with close toe shoes after hours of wear.    I now wear a open style sandal no more thong flip flops for me☹️

I will definitely ask lots of questions.  My closest friend is a nurse and she gave me a list -- what insurance pays, pt if necessary, home health care options, etc.

This was with orthopaedic surgeon I've already seen podiatrists.

Thank you again.

@homedecor1   If you don't mind my asking, did the podiatrists recommend surgery as well?  Just asking because of my issues.  Trying to decide what type of doctor to see.

@NYCLatinaMe

podiatrist did recommend surgery and referred me to orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot reconstruction/surgery.

Re: Foot problems — surgery suggested —

Not doubting but trying to picture how flip flops would do harm to your feet, particularly in the toe area. And @homedecor1 , I thought your brand was good one.

I wish the best for anyone going through this.
