I guess I am no good explaining--I look for bottles and cans while on my walk on the outside of the mall in garbage cans that are there. Some stores are on top others are at the end like Walmart down below. I am not crippled  yet so what  is wrong with that.  I look at bread and subs for sometimes they are marked down and above there is Dollar Tree. My son knows and since the other place where I use to t urn them in closed my son takes me to one  for it is far. DH when alive wo uld walk with me in the mornings. I don't really need the money but it is something to do. Also I talk to nice people. No fun to be alone. I sit enough.

@halfpint1  Kudos to you for being diligent about getting exercise and also for helping the earth by recycling at the same time.

I too have arthritis that has settled in several areas.  Have had arthritis in my hands for many, many years, but as yet (66) my fingers are still pretty flexible, no numbness only occasional pain.

Its pretty much a given that your physician will tell you it is arthritis, so stress to her about the numbness, because in addition to arthritis it could be something more.

Thank you Allegheny. Some people here think 80--81 next month shouldn't be out walking. I walk and collect at the same time and as I said got out through Walmart looking for food etc on sale. And it is during daylight. What am I to do all day--sleep

@halfpint1are thre any senior centers in your area?  I think you need some companionship, and that might be a place where you could find some friends, and also have a nice hot lunch for a small price..

@cherry  I think that is a great suggestion.  May-be @halfpint1 will consider that.  I think a lot of people hesitate getting started with a senior center, but I bet it is fun.   I also thought, since she enjoys people, that may be volunteering might interest her.

People are just trying to be protective.  I have an uncle who at 90, still mowed his own grass, cleared the snow off his driveway in the am before any of his much younger neighbors and every spring planted a small, but producteve garden.  He was able to do this because he stayed active after his retirement and he remained very independent.  I accompanied him to some doctors appointments and he looked so much younger than his actual age the staff thought I was his wife.  (He is 25 years older then me).

There are grown children who live with (off) their parent(s) and don't even know they exist.

How difficult is it to empty your mother's bedroom trash can?  Some things are just too hard to believe.

@halfpint1.... is your son aware of your activities? Pushing a cart for 2 hours searching for recycleables? I ask because if I had an 80 year old mother doing this I would be very upset.

Isn't there some other activity you could engage in to get exercise? Your thread is very upsetting... I hate reading you are in pain from clearly this activity.

@halfpint1 I admire your vim and vigor. Staying active is healthy for the heart and soul. Things are always better when they are done in twos. The senior citizen center is a great idea. You can also check and see if there is a YMCA in your area and then maybe someone will join you. Obviously, you are alert and aware of what is going on around you. Getting older isn't easy, especially if one is alone. I admire you. You Go Girl!  Be and stay safe.

The doctor will help you. Stay well😉

Happiness is not a destination, it is a way of life.
