As I have previously posted my husband has been through an ordeal of trying to get a cancer diagnosis. First we thought it was stage 4 colon cancer with liver mets. After ultrasound, CT scan, endoscopy and liver biopsies we finally have a diagnosis. He has a carcinoid tumor that originated in his small intestine with mets to the liver and some lymph nodes. It is a very slow growing cancer that secretes a slow continuous amount of hormones. It is asymptomatic until it metastisizes to the liver. He will be having injections three times daily for two weeks of a hormone called Sandostatin. After two weeks he will have monthly injections in the doctor's office. Hopefully it will slow down tumor growth and shrink the mets to the liver. It will hopefully stop the diarrhea he has been having and he can gain weight. The oncologist said it is better than having adenocarcinoma. I am feeling positive and so is he. I told him he has to be extra nice to me since I will be giving him the shots for the two week period!!!!! Being a nurse for 34 years, I guess I know how to give an injection!
As I also posted he will be out of a job due to downsizing in his company. We discussed various options and decided on taking the buyout with a one time bonus. He will get 32 weeks of severence plus a bonus. Fortunately I still work part time and have full medical benefits which will help a lot. We will have to adjust some but I think it is workable. It may be a blessing in disguise. He will have time to rest and concentrate on his health.
I went to the gyn because of post menopausal bleeding and had an endometrial biopsy which is negative. I will be having a hysterectomy in 2 weeks. I don't want to have to concern my self about uterine cancer since that is what my mom died of three years ago. I will be glad to get it out.
I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support for us during this stressful time. I wish it was not cancer but I think the not knowing is worse. At least now we have a plan of attack.
