I'm in my 40's. I had huge fibroids, numerous polyps, and serious bleeding. About four years ago, I had a UFE. I did it hoping the fibroids would not return. Despite taking depo provera hormone shots, the fibroids came back. I've been doing sonograms and sonohystograms every three to six months for several years now. In the spring I had a D&C due to bleeding issues. I've finally given up and have scheduled my hysterectomy for later this month.
Good luck to you Donor, whatever your decision.

You all have been so kind in your words and support! Tomorrow is the ultrasound, which for me, is uncomfortable but tolerable. One doctor is suggesting D@C again and another is suggesting Endometrial biopsy....Both gather tissue and test for the same things as I understand it. The bleeding has lessened since I posted a few days ago, that night, I was really scared. Thank you all again for the hand holding, I will report back. xo

Oh, I hope everything goes well! Maybe you won't have to wait too long for answers to this ultrasound. When I was going thru my problems, I got lots of good prayers. I will say one for you now, Donor. Please report back!

Just a word of caution. When I saw my gyn with the staining problem, he told me I should have a D&C, not just an endometrial biopsy. A D&C takes out all of the lining of the uterus so if there is cancer there, it will be caught. Just having an endometrial biopsy can miss a cancer since the doctor is taking snippets of different spots of the lining. That made sense to me, so, of course I had the D&C--and my endometrial cancer was discovered.
Please keep us updated!!!
God Bless,
GraciesMom

Following up as I promised.
Saw Gyno yesterday and fibroids and uterine lining are unchanged but now there is a polyp. I decided to have D&C in two weeks and he will remove polyp hopefully at that time. I have never had kids so dilating my cervix is a challenge, sorry for TMI but it's my reality. Seems all of this is made worse by being on hormones...which I need to be for several reasons including osteoporosis. I know it's a controversial topic but was the right choice for me. He touched on hysterectomy but for me, at this point, I am just going ahead with this procedure and waiting a while longer to see if the bleeding returns. He is not concerned at all about cancer, which I was so lucky to hear. Thank you all again for the good thoughts. xo

Have vaginal ultrasound on Tuesday but have any of you had this situation lately and I wonder if the treatment options have changed in the last couple years? Thank you for a little hand holding.....
Hi Donor - I hope that sharing my experience with you will help you or someone else who might read this. I'm 56 and have been very lax in getting my yearly pap tests and exams, and NEVER had a mammogram. Probably 15 yrs. ago I had a period that would not quit. I bled for probably 14 days or so and finally went to the ER one night because it was so bad and I was scared. Ultrasound revealed a fibroid. After that one episode I never had that lengthy of a period again, but every month I would have some exceptionally heavy days, the kind where you can't leave the house, let alone be too far from the bathroom. So, that continued until about a year or so ago. For the past year, there's been unpredictable bleeding, but nothing heavy. It could happen a day here, a day there, and be back again the next week, then maybe skip a week or two and get a new surprise.
I've been through the hot flashes, night sweats, etc., and expected that menstruation should have ceased by now, but it never did. Coming from a family who doesn't really discuss such things, I thought I was maybe in a tapering off stage. Right before Thanksgiving, my DH and I decided we needed to be a little more proactiive regarding our health so we each had a colonoscopy and I made appointments for the other things I needed to do. After all my worrying, the mammogram turned out to be no big deal. Had I known, I would have been going all these years. At the GYNE, I explained what was going on and she informed me that at my age I had completed menopause and that the bleeding was abnormal. She ordered a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound plus an endometrial biopsy (sample to be harvested in her office). The results came back that I had endometrial hyperplasia (thickening) about 3 times normal. The biopsy results came back as hyperplasia WITHOUT atypia (normal). Still, she wasn't content. She ordered a hysteroscopy and D & C. Based on her visual examination, she was "worried". The pathology on that tissue came back as hyperplasia WITH atypia (abnormal, precancerous). While I'm grateful there's no cancer there, yet, my GYNE recommended a complete hysterectomy and I'm fine with that. At this stage in my life my ovaries aren't putting out much estrogen anyway so I'm on board with getting everything out of there. I'm waiting for a call with a surgery date (the robotic equipment needs to be reserved in advance), but expect to have it done within the next month or so. Am I looking forward to it? No, but I will be relieved once it's all over with.
All that said....PLEASE get in to see your GYNE and get all the necessary tests done. They will either confirm that your fine or determine if you need to proceed with further treatment of perhaps only a D & C, or maybe more. Good luck to you.
