Has anyone here been prescribed this new biologic osteoporosis treatment, or had their doctor talk about it, yet?  Just curious.

Evenity is the brand name for Romosozumab.

@PilatesLover     Have you read up on it... all the awful possible side effects?

@SeaMaiden

I read the side effects and not seeing "even death" listed?  Were I suffering debilitating pain and function, those risks listed would be pretty insignificant to me.

Some of the meds I have taken over the last 17 years, had the "death" part on several of them. I know the statin I am taking causes decreased flexibility for me. I however am still almost as flexible as I was 35-40 years ago, I feel, because of always fitting stretching into all my physical activities. I did however tear my left leg Quad muscle, I think by over stretching it. But hey, *hit happens!

I am aware that many taking a statin have some pretty terrible pains and muscle spasms while taking them. Most in my 72 Cardiac Rehab Classes had these problems, but the majority of them were on a much higher dosage than I have ever taken. That and very, very few of them did any regular daily stretching.   As long as my much trusted Cardiologist wants me to keep taking them, I will.

Strayed a little off topic but to me it is still on the topic of "side effects" of meds. Plus, I just can't seem to help myself on this forum.  =^..^=

Re: Evenity for osteoporosis

@PilatesLover  I've recently had more problems with my fractured back. After an MRI last week, my Rheumatologist has stopped the Prolia injections and I'm now giving myself daily shots of Forteo to built up my bones. These shots will be given for 18-24 months, then back to the Prolia injections for the rest of my life.

The Ortho. Surgeon wanted to use the cement fillers in my back after more problems occured, which I was leery of such a procedure . . . and the side-effects could have been serious. My Rheomatologist said, "NO!!" I'm good with the solution of Forteo. If you trust your Rheumatologist (or specialist) that's all you need for a wise decision.

IIRC Evenity was among the medications when reading about Forteo. I don't see anything dire about the side effects listed under Eventity.  Give it a try! Best wishes.

@BirkiLady, do you know why you weren't prescribed the older med Fosamax?  I'm curious as that's what I was placed on.  Apparently I take it for 2-5 years and then stop.

Re: Evenity for osteoporosis

If you are taking meds to help prevent broken bones, please do some research. NONE of them prevent broken bones. At all. Studies have shown this.

Re: Evenity for osteoporosis

[ Edited ]

@tansy  Several years ago I was on Boneva for about five years, which is the limit (IIRC) for taking it. It is only a preventative medication for osteoporsis. At that point, I had not been diagnosed with osteoporsis; it was used to prevent it since I'm on so many meds which may cause it.

I had been without any meds for osteoporisis for about 20 months when the women hit me in December 2018. My back was fractured in three places. Had another DEXA scan in March 2019, which was my 2-year scheduled time.

Since I'm on so many other meds which are likely to cause osteoporsis, my  Rheumatolgists decided to put me on Prolia injections in March, 2019. That DEXA scan showed I'm now in the early to middle stages on osteoporsis. The ortho. surgeon and my PCP agreed Prolia was an excellent procedure. I read up on it and did my research and proceeded with the first injection, which are given in their clinic every six months.

In September, I had additional problems with my left knee and my back. For the first time the the ortho. surgeon ran MRI's of my back and still very black and blue knee!! (About time, huh??) Up until two weeks ago, all they had done were x-rays.

The MRI's came back with a fracture (surprise!) to my left knee, which is healing 10 months later. (No wonder it's been bothering me and is still so discolored. WHY didn't those ortho. surgeons PAY attention to me?) And, a fourth fracture in my back.

The ortho. surgeons wanted to use a cement-type filler in the fourth fracture since I'm unable to tolerate anesthea due to my epilepsy. My Rheumatologist is very professional, but it was obvious he was stunned at their lack of MRI's and "fix-it" techniques. He realizes my bones need to be built up and stopped the Prolia injection (which would have been given that day) and we talked about the Forteo shots for 18-24 months. Then, I'll resume Prolia injections for the rest of my life as a maintenance procedure. He is being proactive. Again, I read up and did my research. I'm going with this new, very expensive medication in an attempt to build my bone density.

That accident threw me around in my car and did far more damage than I dreamed. Without my seat belt and air bags, I would not have survived the speed of that other vehicle. I'm currently in the back brace again when working in the yard, vacuuming, lifting groceries, etc. Haven't golfed or played tennis at all this year. My life has been curtailed considerably due to the discomfort.

I'm grateful for my specialists and Rheumatologists.

Not sure the hospital (which the ambulance took me to) referred me to very knowledgeable ortho. surgeons. I had to threaten a second opinion to get the MRI's. Doesn't say much about this group, does it? Thankful I could not let them operate on me!!  It's been a very long 2019.

Re: Evenity for osteoporosis

@PilatesLover  Thanks for your kind words. I've stopped giving updates. It has become upbelieveable.

This is why drivers must have the best insurance available! I'm still turning all expenses into MY insurance company who is paying the medical bills. When everything is all healed, we'll settle up with HER insurance company.

The Forteo shots cost over $3500 per month. Holy Cow!! I have applied for financial assistance to help with co-pays since that throws me into the big black hole of Part D.  My Rheumatologist and I cannot see making her insurance reimburse me for that when there is a way out with assistance from Eli Lilly. Imagine I won't be paying into IRS nearly as much in 2020; but for what I've been through, I'd gladly pay as usual.

Re: Evenity for osteoporosis

I told my NP   I won't take dexiscan because I won't take the Rx for osteoporosis or osteopopenia

too many risks from ALL of the Rx available

My former GYN applauded my decision.  She wouldn't take the either.

NP said "I'll note your records"'

fine with me
