Erythritol is a perfectly safe alternative to sugar.  It's very low in calories and will not spike blood sugars or insulin.  Erythritol actually occurs naturally in some fruits and our bodies can make it, albeit in low levels. It can cause stomach distress when consumed in large amounts.  There is currently no proof that it's a dangerous substance or contributing factor in cardiovascular disease.

Excellent post.  We all need to use common sense.

There are basically 3 types of sugar substitutes. This chart shows most of them. The group in the middle are considered potential problem makers and are totally artificial with zero-calorie. The list on the right are naturally-derived sweeteners and have a caloric value...they have a carb content, aka 'sugar alcohols'.

@SilleeMee - there are actually more than what your chart has listed. I'm sensitive to this because of the way we eat and I've become a label reader besides going down the rabbit hole now and then.  Just because it's listed on my chart doesn't mean I endorse them all, though.  There are also more which are not listed because they are not keto friendly, in case you see some of yours missing or they may be using a different name.  For instance, Lo Han Guo is another name for Monk Fruit.

All I know is that erythritol and I do not get along. Take that for what it’s worth.

Every artificial sweeteners that ends in " tol" causes me gastric issues.

These sweeteners are in everything  from chewing gum to medications.
