@tsavorite, I should also add... working out, being physically active in whatever way possible, is also important for your overall health. I have been athletic and physically fit my entire life -- I attribute my level of fitness at that time to keeping me alive.  I continued to be physically active after that experience and lifted weights for quite a few years, but recognized that I needed more recovery time than the next person. So do what you are able...even if it's working out from a chair... and allow plenty of time for your body to recover too.

@tsavorite

I don't want to be remiss in thanking you for posting this topic, which is very prominent in my life, as well as my daughters' lives.  It seems more women suffer from these types of illnesses than men which sometimes leads me to wonder if hormonal issues are not a part of it.

I wish I could tell you what kind of specialist to see.  I have been to rheumatologists, endocrinologists, and right now my symptoms are gastrointestinal (as well as the others which have not gone away).  I have not found these specialists to be particularly helpful in my case.  I do hope you are more successful.  You might might find an infectious disease doc to be helpful.  To date I have not been to one.

I am hoping I did not dominate the conversation too much.  Thank you again for a very important thread.

Thanks for the replies.....I was thinking of looking into the Lysine and a few other supplements to address the EBV specifically.  From what I have found online natural path doc's do recommend this and it is safe enough to try and see if it helps.

Fortunately I don't take much by way of prescription meds.....my thyroid meds are really it....and antihistamine once daily for allergies.  My doc gave me a script for blood testing called ImmunoCap....seems like a good idea.  This can help me with food allergies too.

@tsavorite Lysine has helped me. It's pretty benign as a supplement goes, not like some vitamins that can be dangerous if you take too much. When I get run down, I up my intake of it until I feel better. I feel  better faster when I take it than when I don't.

Quse....thanks for all the replies to this topic....really took off and I finally got a chance to read thur them all.  I was wondering if you could tell me how much l-lysine you take daily to keep this EBV in check.

I did read that fish oil (recently purchased Lessman's as a TSV HSN) and today picked up 25mg's of zinc and organic coconut oil.  I normally take my d3....calcium...k2 daily for my bone health.  My d3 was 67 so good on that front.

Someone posted about b12 I think....I take that....and mine was 836.....also I take it either as a supplement or in my protein drink.

My sister was 18 when she got EBV...very bad strep with it....and 1yr later MS...a very very bad onset case.  My Mom and I have always believed this EBV caused her to come down with MS.  They did treat her with penicillin and she had a horrible allergic reaction.  Then the numbness/tingling....months later.

From what I have read online just about everyone is exposed to EBV...some like myself get a bad case reaction from it and others don't even know they ever had it.  I had the horrible strep throat...inflamed spleen was out of HS for 6weeks and then couldn't play any contact sports or do gym class for months.

I am sure eating better....getting sugar out of my diet will help with many things....I will do my best in cutting down and have been for a good while now.

Thanks for all the info and replies to all the ladies posting here....

@tsavorite I take 1 1000 mg tablet or capsule (I use Now foods or Solgar brands) a day, during the "seasons" that I am susceptible to being run down. (Holiday time, Spring..basically the times I've mapped thru the years on when I tend to het run down). After those "seasons", I don't take it unless I get a cold sore (almost always in the same spots on my lip and under my nose) then I take at least 3 1000 mg tablets/capsules per day..sometimes up to 5000 mg total per day, until the cold sore goes away. This is what works for me, but is, by no means a prescription. Some people start with 500mg. It also affects calcium absorption, so keep that in mind.

Also, with the B12, most people take b12 in the form of cyanocobalamin. Cyanocobalamin has to be converted by the body to use. I take b12 supplement in the form of methylcobalamin (Vitamin shoppe dissolving lozenges). I was taking the other form when I was tested for b12 deficiency. I had a blood test, and was still deficient. Then I did some research and switched to the methyl form..the next time I was tested, the b12 was no longer deficient, so I know that this form of b12 is being absorbed by my body.

Like I said, this is by no means a prescription for anyone else. Just what I've found works for my body.

@SaRina So true! I used to be a "gym rat", lifting heavy, intense cardio...but I found it was doing the exact opposite of what I thought I was doing. I thought I was keeping in shape, but was really beating the tar out of myself, and was more stressed and run down instead of less. Now I exercise much more mildly..still get the heart going, still do weights, but way more in tune with what I can and can't do..and like you said...allow for more recovery time.

@Quse, yes!  The same thing happened with me.You learn to recognize your limitations, accept them, and work with them, making the necessary adjustments, instead of giving up altogether. :-)

Ok thanks for that....I don't get cold sores but I am having a difficult time getting my tonsils to totally clear up since last fall when my throat swelled up and was so painful...like a pinecone was stuck in it.  Saw ENT for that a few months later and he could still see white spots...not strep throat but tonsil stones (YUK GROSS)...told me surgery is a option but they don't like to do that often and I am not really interested in that either!  I know tonsils are the bodies immune system check in point...so it's like I have still got it going on and my labs 10days ago show the EBV is active...if I hadn't already had mono as a teen they would be telling me I have it now.

Sorry got of track some with more info....I do take the correct form of b12 but truly it has never done anything for my energy levels.  I used to keep it at 1200+ for my labs in past relect that and I easily absorb vitamins.

I have never been a "gym rat" LOL with low energy most my life not possible....heck I'd say since I got mono at 15yrs old.  I lift weights 2 times per week and not heavy ones (I simply can't ) and doing cardio I stay at the fat burn level on my eliptical 30mins 3 times per week.  This seems to be my plateau....I am still very "weak" in muscle strength....that's what they told me back in PT a few yrs ago and helped me get my workout program going.  I am better then I was back then but I really expected I would be much less fatigued.

Basically if I have a workout day I can pretty much forget about doing to much more that day....really just the basics.  I have backed off on my expectations....

Ok another question....do you take lysine with food or on empty stomach? and did you take the entire amount whether it is 1000mg's or 2000mg's all at same time or split up??

Re: Epstein Barr Virus....Chronic Fatigue...Hashimoto's

For anyone who is interested, here are a couple of groups on FaceBook that discuss EBV:

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) "the silent disease"

CEBV R & R (Research and Recovery for Chronic Epstein-Barr Virus)
