Unilever, the owner of brands like Dove, Nexxus, and Suave, has issued a voluntary recall of dry shampoo products due to potentially elevated levels of benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer.

A voluntary product recall was announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Unilever United States is voluntarily recalling select lot codes of dry shampoo products produced prior to October 2021 from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé due to potentially elevated levels of benzene.

Benzene is a human carcinogen. Exposure to the chemical can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin. It can cause cancers such as leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow. It can also cause blood disorders that can be life-threatening.

In the company’s announcement, Unilever says it is recalling these products out of an abundance of caution. “Based on an independent health hazard evaluation, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”

No reports of any health consequences related to this recall have been received.

These products were distributed nationally and retailers have been instructed to remove recalled products from store shelves.

If you have any of the affected aerosol dry shampoo products, you should stop using them.

Visit Unilever’s website for information on how to receive reimbursements for eligible products.

Dove, Suave, Bed Head, TRESemmé among affected brands

Prior to October 2021? Those products are already used up and long gone.

I never understood recalls, they are always a day late and a dollar short.

@MezzieStarr What a ridiculous statement.  Goog grief.  Obviously, they are erring on the side of caution for those who might still have some of these products laying around.  Finally, not all product recalls are a dollar short (whatever that means).  Many are very timely and have kept me from eating food or other products that could cause me harm.

@MezzieStarr

UMMM...I DO have dry shampoo still from prior to 2021.  I always stock up and share with my DIL

Current news reports are listing Not Your Daughter's as one with the highest amounts of Benzene.

I emailed them and this is their reply

"We totally understand your concern and appreciate you reaching out to us. The safety of our consumers is our highest priority. Our products have no traceable amounts of benzene.

The report that has been recently published is inconsistent with the data provided by our suppliers and the rigorous ongoing testing to ensure the safety and integrity of our products.

We are committed to continuous evaluation to ensure the utmost safety and quality of all our products.

Thank you!

NYM Team"

TOTAL contradiction to news reports.  The news sites all have ads on them, so I am not posting...but if you google Not your MOthers' dry shampoo recall, it comes up often.

CBS is reporting

Spray from one can of Not Your Mother's Beach Babe dry shampoo contained 158 parts per million of benzene, while a can of Batiste Bare Dry Shampoo held 15 parts per million of the chemical, according to Valisure's findings. Inhaling benzene at levels of 0.4 parts per billion frequently over a lifetime might cause an additional cancer per 100,000 people, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

In the trash they go......

I too would err on the side of caution @RespectLife .  That's just for me.  You are rightfully doing what's in your best interest.  People can choose.  I'm just the messenger!

Gosh @gertrudecloset  and I DO appreciate it.

I rarely watch the news and this is my only 'social media'

I would not have known.

When you and  @Mindy D post recalls, it is greatly appreciated.

I also have a ton of Philosophy dry shampoo which was listed as NOT having any issues.

Hate to lose the money I spent, but not taking chances.

To be honest, we really don't like Not Moms......was only using it up cuz I bought it!

That'll teach me to buy too much when on sale!
