My thyroid tests are always in the low normal. My doc says all is well but I am cold intolerant, thinning hair and weight gain. Something has to be off. Not a table salt user.

Sometimes h lowest dose of Thyroxine or a name brand is prescribed to put you in range. If your iodine is low your doc should have tested for it. Pre natal vitamins might have iodine sometimes. Low normal means it could dip out of range. Maybe you could ask your doc to treat you for Hypo thyroid or ask to see an endocrinologist.
Just random thought that might give you food for thought.

Here's a link to a very recent discussion on Lugnols Solution. It doesn't completely answer your question but there was some banter about iodine.

Hi granddi! I am going through the same thing as you. My doctor said I am on the low end of the numbers. She didn't even ask me about systems and I would need to be watched, with blood test. very carefully and I know she wouldn't do that. She just wanted to give me pills, I didn't accept that. Numbers are just a part of it. Some people with higher numbers can be hypo.
My iodine was perfect, so that wasn't the answer for me. Please see an endocrinologist, that is what I am going to do. Endocrinologist are specialist for the most amazing hormone in our bodies. If you can take a copy of your blood test to the endocrinologist that would be a good thing to do.
Hope you can get the help you need to feel well.

Even if you're not a table salt user, you need to insure that iodine is in your diet. Many achieve the desired level by simply using table salt with iodine added to it on an egg once a week. Manufacturers have been doing this for years and years, like Morton Salt with Iodine.
My mother developed a goiter as a result of not having salt with iodine in the house.
BTW: I am cold intolerant, have slightly thinning hair and have experienced some weight gain. My being cold has to do with baroreceptors in my body; and, the other two with a med I'm now taking (which I cannot stand because it makes me sleep during the day.) Also, my T3-T4 and all relative tests are normal.

There are ways to get iodine without salt. Kelp. Kelp is easy to buy dry and blend the sheets in your blender. These can be used in a empty salt shaker on your table to add to foods .

Hi Ladies- If you are new to Thyroid issues, please be aware that if you are talking about he number score of your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) a HIGHER SCORE means that your Thyroid HORMONE is LOW.
Conversely, a LOWER TSH means that your Thyroidw HORMONE level is HIGH.
Unfortunately granddi, I am in EXACTLY the same situation as you are, but NOTHING helps your (and my!) symptoms without negative side effects, one of which can be bone loss, which I definitely did NOT want to happen.
I always joke with my endo that I want my TSH to be lower, because I want to be revved up, and she always says that I don't want brittle bones, and she's always right.
I DO put a drop of Liqui-Kelp in my coffee every several days, with the permission of my internist, because I also have very little iodine in my diet.
Bottom line, if you are supplementing without doctor's input, and you are feeling "better", you are probably messing with fire.
I DO find personally that a BRIEF period of physical activity CAN make me feel warmer. Doesn't do anything for my stringy, bald spot laden hair though.
The weight? Paleo worked for me, 85 pounds worth.
GOOD LUCK- thyroid disease is a lousy situation.

I'm hypothyroid & am going to ask my doctor to check mine when he does my other labs in Apr. He has said in the past with all the salt in the food from the grocery store I should not have a problem. I don't eat all that packaged frozen meals, canned goods etc that are full of sodium. I use Himalayan Sea Salt & don't use iodized salt. My hair is also thinning but I have lost weight lately though. My TSH was around 10 last time. It's generally around 1. I'm not going back down to 1. I felt better on 10 then I did at 1. The doctor is going to have to get over it. He needs to let me go by how I feel not what the labs show. I was gaining weight when it was 1 but not now. I also get cold. At night my feet & bones in my lower legs feel frozen.

l would not take and Iodine supplement without additional consultation with your old or a new physician. It does have some side effects.

When I'm not using coarse-ground sea salt or Kosher salt in a dish, I always use iodized Morton Salt. Would never buy non-iodized, because my mother had terrible thryroid problems, including goiter, and my sister does, too. I do not, but I'm the only one in the family who realized/realizes the value of iodine and how hard it is to get from foods.
