...about thrombocytopemia? (low platelet count)

I know it means a low platelet count but what I can't find--and I've scoured every web site I can think of--is what's considered a normal range.

I've got a call in to my doctor but it's late Friday afternoon so she may be done for the week and I probably won't hear from her till next week.

I don't know if I'm severely low or just a little. If someone knows what the normal range is, I'd sure feel a lot better.

And, please, no chewing of my a** for asking a medical question on an internet mb. i KNOW you're not doctors but if I had a little information to go one for a few days till she returns my call, I'd feel better.

Different Labs use different measures.

A normal platelet count in adults ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. A platelet count of less than 150,000 platelets per microliter is lower than normal. If your blood platelet count falls below normal, you have thrombocytopenia.

@GoneButNotForgotten A count of lower than 150,000 per mcLml of blood is considered t hrombocytopenia. One lower than 10,000 is considered severe tcp.. The  normal number of platelets in the blood is 150,000 to 400,000 platelets per microliter (mcL) or 150 to 400 × 109/L.

Your lab report should show what the normal range is for each parameter, for instance platelets, WBC, RBC and so on.  Those ranges usually appear next to your count. Abnormal counts are flagged to indicate low or high. Normal counts are not flagged.

Platelet counts can be effected by certain external factors, such as collection technique by the blood draw technician and testing equipment used. Usually very low or very high plt counts need rechecked  with a second blood draw to rule out those types of external errors. Slightly low or slightly high counts are usually not significant unless there are other medical issues which may indicate further examination.

My career was spent in a lab where I did many platelet counts amongst other things. I held certifications for specialist in hematology and chemistry.

 Just ask the lab where you tested  for your  serum lab results- all labs  print the normal ranges on the lab   slips.

I have no advice or knowledge to share, but I have to tell you I loved your post!  I see from time to time someone post asking for input & I'll read someone's reply "just google it".  I have to bite my tongue but so often I'd like to respond "well, no ****** Sherlock!  I'm sure she knew that, but she was hoping to get some insight from the forum".  But, I don't respond. I just talk a sip of wine and shake my head & move on.
