When I eat fish from a restaurant or frozen fish from the store I get sick. I can eat canned tuna with no problems. Does anyone know what they put in it that makes me sick? It has to be a spice or a preservative or an oil. This just started about 4 yrs ago.

I am not fond of fish other than shrimp & canned tuna .... last December I made tuna salad with tuna, celery & mayo .... While I was eating it I didn't think it tasted right but, I continued to eat it thinking it was just me ... well, a few hours later I got sick to the point that my sight was blurry & I felt dizzy...... I will NEVER eat tuna again!!!! ... the tuna I ate was the tuna that I have been using for many years so, I guess it was a "bad" batch!! 🐠🐟🐬🐳🐋

Fish can be funny, not as in ha ha, but sometimes you just get some that makes you sick. I purchased some Salmon (not my favorite to begin with), frozen from Sam's Club that has a very high "turn over" rate in their grocery dept, one of the reasons I shop there.  All the pieces were frozen, made it home frozen, and continued to be frozen until I pulled out a couple for us to eat.  We ate them all and I finally pulled out the last two (always frozen and eaten within a few weeks).... DH was fine, enjoyed his and mine was "weird", kind of "tough" but not enough to throw it out so I ate it.  Five/six hours later I was SO SICK....  I'm positive it was food poisoning... chilled, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea!

So what do we do?  How on earth can we tell if something the plant has thrown into a bag and frozen is safe to eat??

Same thing happened to DH on vacation when I went into a national chain grocery store and purchased a few frozen dinners for our motorhome....  I think their freezer must have gone on the blink enough to thaw out the one my DH ate.... then they re-froze it!

I am SO careful anymore, but it's hard.....  Needless to say, no more Salmon for me (hard to even think about any kind of fish, even now).....

@bowlicious,  In what way does it make you sick?  What symptoms?   This would help you investigate the source of the problem, I believe.

It might be the source of the fish, too.

I found that if I ate shrimp from SE Asia my throat swelled and got itchy.

I haven't tried other types of seafood because that keyed me in to be sure and check for source on packaging of frozen, or otherwise, seafood.

But maybe it's something like that.  I can eat US shrimp all day long without a problem, but what came from SE Asia was a definite no go.

It makes me throw up. Before I realized it was the fish, I ate fish from different restaurants and even McDs. Finally the light in my head went on that all the times I had been sick I had eaten fish.

I wonder about 2 things.  Could you be developing an allergy?  Or maybe those fish have been contaminated along the way with shellfish?

I would always feel lousy after I had lobster and really didn't know why.  Years later, I had shrimp in a pasta dish and that night I had to crawl to bed.  My eyes were shifting from side to side like mad.  I felt just awful.  I was home alone with 2 small children,  my DH had already relocated to his new job across the country.  I figured I'd feel better in the morning or I wouldn't wake up at all.  I said a prayer and fell asleep.

In the morning I had one BIG headache.  Called the Dr., they asked what I had eaten the last few days because they thought I was allergic to something.

That's when we realized I was allergic to shellfish.

Now I watch the seafood displays and see many times the shellfish touching other seafood.  I've had them take fish out for me and they scrape it along shrimp, lobster...needless to say, I tell them they need to get another piece out because I'm allergic to the shellfish you just touched.

That's what makes me wonder, if that has happened to fish you have had.

I know people can develop an allergy late, late, late in life.

@bowlicious

Two items stand out for me:

Symptoms

As with other food allergies, the symptoms of a fish allergy may range from mild to severe. They include:

  • Hives or a skin rash
  • Nausea, stomach cramps, indigestion, vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Stuffy or runny nose and/or sneezing
  • Headaches
  • Asthma
  • Anaphylaxis (less common), a potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing and can cause the body to go into shock

Be advised that some restaurants may substitute cheaper types of fish for what is on the menu (for example, what is listed as red snapper could really be tilapia). Since many types of fish look alike once they are filleted, dishonest suppliers to supermarkets may substitute cheap fish for more expensive types, according to an investigation by Oceana, a conservation nonprofit.

I could very well be allergic to fish but then why can I eat tuna and lake caught fresh fish with no reaction. That's what leads me to believe it is a spice or preservative or oil.

I have been surprised to find beef being sold that is not grown and butchered in the USA.  I check all fresh meat I buy that it's from the USA.  Same with fruit. especially strawberries and I wash EVERYTHING, especially fruit/vegetables that grows on the ground even with rinds.  Simply put, even though we have had our share of bacteria, at least the USA has more stringent laws.... and the items don't have to travel so far to make it to our stores.
