Re: Do You Track Your Daily Water Intake?

I don't but I should. I try to drink water all day, at least 8 8oz glasses, but probably fail-drinking 5 or 6. If I fall below that I realize it immediately, my glucose levels climb.

Re: Do You Track Your Daily Water Intake?

Mayo Clinic:

Is water the only option for staying hydrated?

No. You don't need to rely only on water to meet your fluid needs. What you eat also provides a significant portion. For example, many fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and spinach, are almost 100% water by weight.

In addition, beverages such as milk, juice and herbal teas are composed mostly of water. Even caffeinated drinks — such as coffee and soda — can contribute to your daily water intake. But go easy on sugar-sweetened drinks. Regular soda, energy or sports drinks, and other sweet drinks usually contain a lot of added sugar, which may provide more calories than needed.

How do I know if I'm drinking enough?

Your fluid intake is probably adequate if:

  • You rarely feel thirsty
  • Your urine is colorless or light yellow

Your doctor or dietitian can help you determine the amount of water that's right for you every day.

To prevent dehydration and make sure your body has the fluids it needs, make water your beverage of choice. It's a good idea to drink a glass of water:

  • With each meal and between meals
  • Before, during and after exercise
  • If you feel thirsty

Should I worry about drinking too much water

Drinking too much water is rarely a problem for healthy, well-nourished adults. Athletes occasionally may drink too much water in an attempt to prevent dehydration during long or intense exercise. When you drink too much water, your kidneys can't get rid of the excess water. The sodium content of your blood becomes diluted. This is called hyponatremia and it can be life-threatening.

My heart specialist told me just last week, not to drink more than 2 liters of water daily. He said more than that  amount of water is too much for the kidneys to process effectively.

I don't need to track it. I already know I don't drink enough fluids. Plus, I'm prone to kidney stones. Ouch. I know water is the gold standard, but it for bathing and swimming where I'm concerned.

I've tried adding things to water to no avail. Lemon tastes horrible, and other things are too sweet for my taste. I eat a lot of soups and broths, and I love citrus fruits. Even watermelon is a good choice in the summer, and I love that. I just wish I could drink the water. Because I know how healthful that is for a lot of reasons.

@HiLo

2 liters(68oz) is not a lot of water for someone that does intensive workouts, losing a lot of fluid. When ice skating I always drank at least 64oz during my 2 hour skating sessions. That, plus whatever amount of fluids I drank, throughout the rest of my 24 hour day.

Never heard that someone with 2 healthy kidneys cannot process more than that amount of fluid. One thing I do know. Keeping the kidneys active helps keep  from forming Kidney Stones.

What does your Heart Specialist says happens to your kidneys, that is negative, if drinking more than 2 liters?

Re: Do You Track Your Daily Water Intake?

I don't measure how much water I drink.  After my 2 cups of coffee in the morning water is all I drink for the rest of the day so I know I get plenty.  I refill my glass quite often and know that my body is hydrated.

Re: Do You Track Your Daily Water Intake?

I don't actually track my water, but it's my drink of choice so I drink it all day long. I consume more in the summer than when it's cold, but I use a pur canister that I consume each day, I think it's 64 oz capacity. When I travel, I don't drink as much since it's not always easy to find a bathroom. Never had that issue until I hit my 60s but it sure has surfaced as I've aged.

Re: Do You Track Your Daily Water Intake?

I have a 32 oz insulated mug and in the winter, I fill it twice a day. In the summer I'll fill it three or four times. My dad was hospitalized several times for dehydration and would never come close to drinking enough. If you could get sixteen ounces down him in a day you were lucky.

Never exceeded one of those big orange jugs for the 24 hour testing, but am working on it 😂

@Still Raining

Big Orange Jug for what testing? Couldn't be 1 of those 128oz of Go/NuLytely could it?

If so, none of the many I drank were orange, had to stick with light colors in mine.

Nope, the ones your have to return full 😬for a 24 hour urine test.  Heavy little beasts and hard to conceal.

@Still Raining

Didn't know about that one. My Urologist did a Cystoscopy, and I have all the Urodynamics Testing done. And I think everyone has given a urine sample, but! Never was asked to p in a bottle for 24 hours. That's a new one to me.

I had to do that a couple of times years ago. Can't remember why now, but something was going on.

I have to make myself drink water now, because on diuretic for BP.  I also exercise alot.

Just have a urine test and a CT on kidneys. Everything OK.

I take a pkg of Emergin C for the electroluytes to be replenished.  The 24 hr test is not a new thing.

Re: Do You Track Your Daily Water Intake?

How can coffee be considered daily intake of fluids when it is a diuretic? You need to drink an extra glass of water to compensate for the coffee.
