I just got a cup of coffee and planked myself on the couch.  We're probably defining plank differently...lol

Until my knee surgery, I did planks almost every day at the Y, and we usually went for several minutes.  I got into my island zone.  My preference is doing planks in trx straps.  However, for right now, I cannot get on the floor.  Looking forward to getting back to my normal routine.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

@QueenDanceALot: Those videos are interesting but I’m guessing the people replying to this post are not just doing planks and nothing else. I do a lot of various exercises for my whole body and core/abs. Planks are just a part of my workout. Planks are also good for other parts of the body and not just the core. The back muscles have to be strengthened also to keep that core in balance. Cher said she holds her planks for 5 minutes! but I’m sure she does a lot of other exercises.

I also don't hold it so long that I can't hold my form.

Perhaps you misunderstand my post. There is more to doing planks than the prone on elbow static plank.  The variations on the videos I posted up the intensity and usefulness of the plank.   Moving planks, in the many ways demonstrated, show the ability to move the body with a stable core, which is essential to overall strength development and injury prevention.  A prone (front) plank doesn't activate the QL  (quadratus lumborum), a deep core muscle that works in concert with all of the other core muscles to stabilize the spine.  Side planks (and their variations) work this muscle, a muscle that isn't easy to target in other exercises.

I didn't mean to imply that the plank is the only exercise anyone is doing.  I am not sure why you would think I did.  I personally do a variety of other exercises (and also coach others), but always incorporate various planks to my routines.  The many progressions increase core stability and the ability to perform other exercises more efficiently.

@QueenDanceALot  Thanks!  I love (and was amazed by) the variety of planks and need to up the core work.....going to incorporate the side planks especially into my routine.  HaHa....the cat, that is so my pup who licks my face when I do floor work or upside down on the teeter at home!

I fell off the boat.

            As in, you walked the plank?

@Sweetbay magnolia

Never heard that term. I improvise many of my own exercises, including some basic Ab exercises that are pretty standard. I find ways to target specific parts of those core muscles to get more a maximum contraction.

Suppose I could give them a name to make them sound like something new, my interests are more with their effectiveness than a name for them.

If this "plank" Ab exercise is working for you, to me that sounds great, and keep on doing them.

@QueenDanceALot

I will give these a try.  In the past, my feet hurt too badly to keep them up.  Perhaps I am doing something wrong.

I spin and do upper body work, but have found doing floor work makes me queasy -- I think it is an inner ear thing when my head is lowered.

These videos -- along with the addition of the cat -- will give me a starting point.

So glad you found the videos to be inspiring!  I love the variety and the progressions of difficulty - that guy is a Plank Master for sure.

And his interactions with the cat (cats, I think - the black and white one is named Kodi, I think and then there's another fluffier dark one who shows up towards the end and I think his name is Shorty - lol) are fun.  I also love the music and cues for each plank in the 100 Planks video.

LOVE how your pup licks your face during your workouts - if I put my yoga mat out at home and do a plank, my cat Nelson jumps on my back Cat LOL
