Can anyone tell me how they go about disposing of old prescription pills? I know that they frown about flushing them down the toilet or putting in them your garbage because they eventually end up in the water supply.

I have quite a few bottles of pills that I would like to get rid of. Do you think Walgreen's would take them back and dispose of them properly?

BTW I just have to mention that the reason for so many leftover meds is that my husband had a bone marrow transplant close to 5 years ago, is completely cured, and hasn't needed a prescription for over 3 years. We PTL for this blessing everyday!!

I trash them. But, if you feel safer give them to Walgreen.

Try your pharmacy or police department or call your county health department.

Our Pharmacy had a collection day this year.

Re: Disposing of old meds.....

My local pharmacy always gladly takes them for disposal. Good thinking not to flush them down the toilet.

Re: Disposing of old meds.....

Walgreens told me ""no"". They recommended that I take them to the local jail where they have a box for old drugs.

VG""S Pharmacy said ""yes"" they do.

So I guess I have my answer. Thanks for the replies.

State Police here in CT will have days throughout the year to turn in old meds, they are few and far between though. I did try my two local pharmacies and they both said they don't take them. Good luck

I just put them in the trash, but we rarely have any unused drugs.

Re: Disposing of old meds.....

Your local hospice foundation will have a list of places to dispose of old meds. Sometimes they'll even come pick them up.

Btw, it is true that flushed meds end up in the water supply and the food chain.
