Disposable masks and the environment

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread and forgive me if someone else already brought this up, but it seems to me I don't hear a lot of talk about the repercussions of throwing all these disposable masks in the trash and where they might end up. I recently heard about a penguin that was found dead with a disposable mask in its stomach.

I had initially bought a box of 50 disposable masks when the pandemic started but when I went through those, I purchased cloth ones that I can wash and reuse.

Re: Disposable masks and the environment

I hate to hear about the poor penguin. I didn't get any disposable masks for us, I did buy a few packs for a relative who is a teacher.

I did see 2 laying on the ground one day last week when I was going into a store. Why people are so trashy, I do not know.

Re: Disposable masks and the environment

I sent off to QVC a few months back and got huge packages of those (I guess) disposable masks.

I don't wear them.  I have a lot of cloth masks I prefer to use.  They can be washed.  Mainly because I get lipstick on them.

My daughter teases me about wearing lipstick but if I don't my lips get sore.

@Annabellethecat66 :I wear chapstick with masks, it's a bit tinted and never comes off on the mask!

I am a runner and there is not one run that I go on that I don't find masks and gloves in the gutters, on the sidewalks, in the bushes. I also see the cloth ones everywhere too.  It's gross

I also saw online the strings on those disposable masks all tangled around a ducks legs. They said to snip those before disposing of the mask.

@Texasmouse

I read that story and the photo of the poor penguin was so very sad, you could tell he starved to death, probably from intestinal blockage from the mask, the article said.

What a slow painful death due to ignorant humans! Grrrrrr......

Disposable masks have become the new 'plastic grocery bag'. I see both 'hanging' around outdoors on various things...disgusting.

Just cut them up into little bits when you dispose of them.
