Re: Discussion of the role of Physician Assistants

1- I will NOT pay the same price or allow my insurance company to be billed the same rate to see a PA or CRNP as a MD.  I understand the medical practice likes to make larger profits but if I need medical care I want a MD.

2- I have noticed new PA or CRNP are going the distance learning route.  Meaning a majority of their education is online.  I asked one PA my Mother was seeing if she has worked with other pts with this particular disease and he said: "no I have never seen this before in real life most of my clinical work was done by case study not real pts."  I was like, "great please practice on my mother, NOT"

I had a PA in an urgent care that could not answer one question without the dear in the headlight look.  I asked why does he need that test?  She stammered on about tests.  I asked what are you trying to diagnose or rule out with this test.  Again, mumbling an answer.  I finally said "does he even need this test?  Finial answer, "no, no really."

I rather work with an old school RN with decades of clinical experience than a new PA or CRNP.  There is a lot you can not learn from a bookl

@Trinity11  "The doctor I expected to see was a PA and missed the correct diagnosis telling me I had an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. I ended up getting the right diagnosis too late and now have post herpetic neuralgia."

Did you sue?

@Mz iMac , I am not litigious. Heck, one doctor who treated me failed to stent a blocked artery and I had a second heart attack. I have had some awful experiences with the medical community but then again I have had some that have saved my life.

Re: Discussion of the role of Physician Assistants

My niece is a NP at a large hospital.  She is highly educated with many years of experience starting with bedside care as an RN, BSN, MSN  progressing through education, and  clinicals to her present position.  She continues through conferences to stay current.  Her speciality is Cardiology.   They are not kids fresh out of nursing school.  Like any field, including doctors,  there bad, good, great and  outstanding

@granddi

With my many serious health issues I have seen many Specialists in several fields. I have seen their PA and NP several times, and depending on my circumstances at that time, seeing them is adequate for me.

However, as in my recent hospitalization last week, I saw both the PA/NP along with the Doctors. The PA/NP did the primary visit to access all the exact information from me, as opposed to just reading the charts.

That was always followed by a more specific visit by each Doctor. I expected the Doctors, not their PA/NP to answer my questions about the seriousness of my condition.

For my semi-annual Hematology Examination, I ask for the NP. Since there are several doctors in this group, I never know which I will see at those visits. I have known this NP for years and her me and my conditions.

I feel better because of that reason. If I have a question she is not sure of, she consults with one of the Doctors, and gets the answer before I leave.

Doctor/PA/NP?  Office visit depends on my purpose for each visit. My view of my personal experiences over many years and medical conditions pertaining to this topic.

@Trinity11  Good grief!!!!  If I had those things happen to me, you can better believe I would be sitting on the right side of Warren Buffett.  I'm not litigious either but in my personal opinion a medical "mistake" is too serious to be "ignored."  Reason why medical professionals are suppose to have "malpractice" insurance.

@Mz iMac Coming from an entire family of attorneys, my husband and son told me it can get very gritty trying to prove a malpractice case. The stress can be not worth the $$$.

Re: Discussion of the role of Physician Assistants

[ Edited ]

my Husband goes to a PA only now.  He started seeing her when his doctor was not available.  She caught an abdominal aneurysm  doing a body pat down on his physical ....most doctors do not do complete body pat downs anymore....and you can catch the aneurysm   by feel...it is a lump on your sternum ...then have it checked out further...she saved his life!   No other "MD"ever felt for it even though he probably had it for several years growing in size.  MD's are often times not as through  as a PA.

The cardiac specialist said he was so impressed that the PA caught  the aneurysm during the physical. It could have burst and DH probably would have died had it not been caught!

@Trinity11

Thank you. A little skating incident last Wednesday, but one that takes months to fully recover. 2 day hospital stay for Xrays and monitoring my healing. Nothing to do with my heart or Cardiovascular System.

Plan on skating tomorrow, had to skip my Sunday skate.

As always, appreciate your concern.
