I've struggled with weight all my life. Once when young I lost 100 lbs, but after a decade put it back on. The second time, I lost 135 lbs.

Both times I refused to weigh myself except for the starting time.

All diets and plans I tried that had a regular weigh in schedule did nothing but discourage me terribly.

It all has to be about lifestyle change, change in ones eating habits and foods, about what feels better. Not about the numbers every few days, that go so slowly (or backwards) and derail the process for many of us.

You're a rock star being able to lose that much weight!!

That works for some people, years ago I had a nutritionist who recommended doing it that way.  It takes the pressure of the scale away and that awful feeling we get when we had an excellent week diet-wise and worked out....and didn't lose pound.  But that doesn't work for me, perhaps because I never diet to lose 10 or 15lbs.  It's always 30 or 40lbs for me and that takes a while.  I need the "reward" of the scale and since I know how weightloss works for me, plateaus and even gaining a pound or two doesn't freak me out. That's the thing with weightloss....there is no "one size fits all" approach.

@chrystaltree

As long as it doesn't affect your plan, I guess it doesn't hurt.

@KentuckyWoman @chrystaltree  I love this;however, the doctor/Pa has always insisted that I weigh and tell me it is required when I express my desire not to be weighed at the doc's office. I am highly aware of my weight, as I weigh myself every morning first thing.  I keep track of my BMI and body composition daily.  I don't like being thrown off-track weighing in the afternoon in clothes at the doctor's.  If it was critical, I would understand the need.  thanks for sharing this information.  I'll firmly but politely refuse in the future.

@phoenixbird

Sounds like you take it a bit too seriously.  It makes you feel "off track" to be weighed in the afternoon or with clothes at the doctor?  I would just disregard that number and go with your own scale you use every day.

However, you can refuse to be weighed.  Consider just telling them what your own number was that day.

Re: Dieting without weighing

My internist scale is always wrong....his ME and I laugh about it everytime.  She says she only wants to weigh herself at work cause it takes off about 4lbs! LOL

The I go in for my annual and my doc is saying "why" are you losing weight?  I said get your scale fixed! LOL  He doesn't believe me....unreal.

My husband said he wants to go to my doctor cause of his scale situation LOL

could not agree with you more. Have seen scale numbers ruin so many goals people had set for themselves, I have lost count. For some that wish to know these ever changing hourly(or more) numbers? Everyone is different and that is what can make life so interesting.

Without lifestyle changes, it is seldom a long term(to me those words mean the rest of one's life).  With scale watching or the opposite, without a Lifestyle/Long Term Commitment, few are successful.

Congratulations on your commitment to have a successful "do over", that is a great achievement.

Re: Dieting without weighing

Ironically, I learned not to fear the scales while on a diet program which required daily weigh-ins. The purpose was to show how weight does fluctuate. After that I was never afraid of the scales again.

When I took my two month old granddaughter for her checkup at her pediatrician, she was most unhappy about being placed on the scale...she began wailing...the nurse said "sweetie, all girls cry when they get on the scale, you are just getting used to it"...loved that!

Re: Dieting without weighing

I’ve never had to diet or watch what I eat in my life...until I hit menopause and followed with a partial hysterectomy in July of 2015.  Then I quit smoking in 2016 and gained around 20 lbs. and was on the train to just keep on gaining.  In 2017 I started exercising and lost 30 lbs.  I weigh myself every morning because I don’t want 2 lbs gained to turn into 10 lbs.  So, it is all in how you want to keep yourself in check.  Weighing myself keeps me accountable.

I love my family, my fur boys, my Jayhawks and accounting!
