Re: Did you ever pick the wrong Doc?

You all always come through with thoughtful comments.

Since I'm ranting.......This was a yearly wellness exam --new patient--including blood order. We all see the Signs all over the place that say" if this is an annual wellness exam (I'm paraphrasing) we cannot talk about specific concerns without charging you another co-pay"

Do any of you see a NURSE before the Dr? They are usually CNA's

What do patients do that have multiple health concerns? Can a diabetic talk about knee pain in same visit?

My husband has seen the same dermatologist for years. He was in the office getting several places burned off and a couple of biopsies. She always chats as she is doing her thing. He said "tell me about botox for excessive head sweating" She said we cannot talk about that. You will have to make another appointment.

It was just a continuation of small talk or so he thought.

We have the best doctors in the world. I wish our health system was not so broken.

Doesn't that seem so ridiculous?!!  Make another appointment for each concern?  Why does the medical industry have to be so darn complicated today?  I have a PCP who I like but only use him for my Medicare wellness check ups.

I also go to another doctor ...an integrative one... a doctor who practices both holistic and traditional medicine.  She will actually spend time with me.  She will spend 45 minutes chatting with what ails me and what I can do to be healthier.  She doesn't take insurance but she is worth it to me.  I like her since she will think outside of the box.  Last year my kidney numbers were off.  My PCP wanted me to see a specialist but the integrative doctor suggested that I might be dehydrated and told me to drink more water.  I did so and the next time I had a blood test my kidney numbers were all within normal range.

The point is I like being able to actually speak with someone about my concerns and have a discussion rather than a  rushed doctor who won't even look me in the face but is just going over all of the questions he is "supposed" to ask and tests to order.

Re: Did you ever pick the wrong Doc?

I had all but forgotten about this.  Right here in Reno, probably almost 4 decades ago, I had gone to a gyno doc who was new to me.

Where it turned 'wrong' was that whenever he touched me it was just weird.  You know that feeling (most women probably are familiar) when somebody touches you in a way that just isn't right and it feels skeevy?

Plus, he would compliment me on body parts.  Not like 'this looks healthy' or something that would make sense for a doc to say to a patient.  But it was like 'those are some nice lookin...' - guess which two parts.  Stuff like that.

I knew it would do no good to say anything.   I was just nobody and this was a guy who was actually very well thought of, societally,  in this area and TBH he never actually DID anything to me.  He was just creepy and slimy.

Needless to say, back then when I actually had medical care, I changed to somebody else after that.  Haven't been to one in a couple of decades and the thought of it just reminds me of that experience.

Re: Did you ever pick the wrong Doc?

I refuse any requests to do the wellness exam -- total waste of my time.

I had a few bad experiences with doctors when I was younger, especially the OB who delivered my first son.  I'm much more assertive now and ask questions.  In general I prefer a female PCP.

In my state a gynecologist must be assisted by a Nurse.  No doctor visit can take place without the nurse or physician assistant; or otherwise qualified person in the room during the examination.  You ought to see if that's the case for your state.  If it is, then don't go back to that Gyn and then report him and find another GYN that abides by the law.  (That's if your state requires it).

Re: Did you ever pick the wrong Doc?

When I went to my yearly doctor visit last December.... I never was asked to take off any clothes... I sat fully dressed... the Doctor( first time seeing him... an internist...) NEVER TOUCHED ME  the entire time. He looked at my eyes and down my throat... asked a few questions... that's it.

How would he know if I had an  abdominal aortic aneurysm or the like without feeling my abdomen?  It seemed strange to me.... Is this how they do physicals today? No hands on?

Yes!

I self referred myself for an ugly spot on my back. I asked myself why a physician has never mentioned the spot? Bc no one ever looks!

I'm amazed that seldom does a doc put the stethoscope to check the carotids, or looks or touches ankles, nail beds.

I know a lady about 50ish and she always checks problems in the mental health section and has never had a doctor ask about the problems answers. Just her little experiment.

I told one PCP, I don't want the standard of care. I want the care you would want your own mother to have.

For those of you who have found a competent and good listener PCP consider yourself fortunate.

I'll never forget when I was about 14-15 my parents took me to a doc concerning facial acne and I was told to completely undress.

Re: Did you ever pick the wrong Doc?

@granddi     THESE issues are the reasons I hardly ever go to see a doctor... I buy my own blood tests from Life Extension and have them done. I do pay for them, but, have GOOD TESTS DONE that are very comprehensive and  that Medicare will not pay for... the physical  that I get is USELESS...  so I just do not go anymore.

The last checkup I had last December was the first one I had had in 8 years since my joint replacement surgeries.  I only did it to appease my Husband.... and then the doctor did NOTHING....

Do you understand how to read these tests?  If so, and they are good test results, I guess that's ok.  If they were not good test results, how would you know and what would you do about it?

I know people who hate going to the doctor (my son), but even he will go at some point.

Re: Did you ever pick the wrong Doc?

I was referred to a Nephrologist and it took two months to get in.  I don't know what to do to help or hurt my kidneys except what I have read online so I was anxious to see him.  I was told you are going to love him by my Obgyn.

He was not personable at all.  Wore a double mask so I don't know what he looked like.  He barely looked at me and when the visit was over all I knew was I needed more tests. I felt like he was irritated and a little snotty.  Now I don't go back for another two months.  Plus I had to wait in the room for an hour before he came in.  I thought that maybe that was because he took so much time with the patients but he was with me about 5 minutes.  I managed a medical office for 21 years and I remember the  days when a doctor walked in and shook your hand and introduced himself with a smile and asked how you were doing.  It just got you off to a good strart.  Made you feel human.  I could have seen a robut yesterday.  I am just venting.  I will go back and get my results in two months maybe he will be in a better mood.
