Sunshine, exercise, vitamins D and B12. Any one of those things, when lacking or low, can cause feelings of depression.

Make sure your level of Vitamin D is not low. Get sunlight for ten minutes a day. If you are taking medications do not mix any supplement for depression with it without an OK from your doctor and it's also good to speak with your pharmacist. St. John's Wort  does effect any antidepressants you might be on. St. John's Wort has multiple clinical studies which have shown effectiveness in mild to moderate depression. Do not try this without speaking to a licensed physician. You might see a temporary elevation of mood lasting a couple hours after ingestion of as large serving of salmon. Exercise, if you feel that your problem is mild.

If you feel like you have more than just a temporary feeling of being down in the dumps for a few days you really should consult with your primary care doctor or see a psychiatrist for an evaluation. The key symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (this is only one type of depression. There are other types) besides low mood, tearfulness or crying or sadness  include changes in sleep including severe insomnia or sleep too much,  changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating and completing tasks which might make it difficult to do your job, pay your bills, read documents, make decisions, even understand the plot of movies you are watching, feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest or pleasure in in things you normally do or enjoy. You can also have anxious thought that become intrusive and exacerbate the depression. You might also experience thoughts of death or suicide. You might have feelings of worthlessness. You might experience feelings of guilt or fixate on past failures or blame yourself over and over. You might have tiredness or a loss of energy or fatigue making tasks seem much harder to do. You might be irritable. You might gain or lose weight without dieting,.You might experience physical problems and pains such as headaches or back pain. Your thinking, feeling or body movements might seem slowed.

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA:

Depressive symptoms

≥5 symptoms during the same two week period that are a change from previous functioning; depressed mood and/or loss of interest/pleasure must be present; exclude symptoms clearly attributable to another medical condition

Depressed mood
Most of the day, nearly every day; may be subjective (e.g. feels sad, empty, hopeless) or observed by others (e.g. appears tearful); in children and adolescents, can be irritable mood
Loss of interest/pleasure
Markedly diminished interest/pleasure in all (or almost all) activities most of the day, nearly every day; may be subjective or observed by others
Weight loss or gain
Significant weight loss (without dieting) or gain (change of >5% body weight in a month), or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day; in children, may be failure to gain weight as expected
Insomnia or hypersomnia
Nearly every day
Psychomotor agitation or retardation
Nearly every day and observable by others (not merely subjectively restless or slow)
Fatigue
Or loss of energy, nearly every day
Feeling worthless or excessive/inappropriate guilt
Nearly every day; guilt may be delusional; not merely self reproach or guilt about being sick
Decreased concentration
Nearly every day; may be indecisiveness; may be subjective or observed by others
Thoughts of death/suicide
Recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without specific plan, or suicide attempt, or a specific plan for suicide
Additional required criteria

Must have all 4, plus ≥5 depressive symptoms above

Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning

@nana59

Diagnosed depression?  My suggestion is Professional Help. Feeling down, many do right now. I know what diagnosed depression is by personal experience.

I was as physically fit as I could be during those years. Was practicing TM/my food intake was only nutritional foods. At that time we had 6 indoor cats.

So exercising/meditation/sunshine/fresh air/furry pets/nutritional foods? Had I counted on those things in lieu of having myself committed? And I was already seeing my Psychiatrist on a regular basis.

I can't describe True Depression or Anxiety/Panic Attacks, but I suffered from both. And while I get that many are feeling very down now, but the step from there to diagnosed depression?  Night and Day, and for all my physical injuries, my near death health issues, those times on the Mental Health floor were far and away the very worst.

@nana59 I forgot. Natural, home made kefir. There's a website that sells the granules online.

Sunshine and exercise is not going to do much for someone who is truly depressed.  These suggestions may help those who are feeling sad, but it takes years of therapy and possibly real medication in the hope of getting well.  Depression is a medical condition and should be dealt with as such with a doctor.

Thank you for this reply (same to @hckynut ). I have a family member that has been diagnosed with depression. Many people offer suggestions of "go outside and get fresh air". While suggestions of the type are great, depression is so mething much deeper than "feeling down".

If anyone has a loved that lives with depression, please educate yourselves on what can be done to help them. There's a lot of things that "we" (used as a general statement) say to someone that's depressed, thinking we are saying positive things that will "cheer them up". Sadly, depression isn't often a simple solution.

There are many vitamins or natural supplements that you can try but first, use the search engine duck duck go, Google now censors almost all natural websites. Things to look into are 4000-5000 mg of vitamin d (as someone else said), taurine, exercise, magnesium, SAMe. These things can help but you gotta make sure they don't cross with meds. There are many other supplements, too. Some increase ones serotonin like prescription medications. Many therapists are doing online meetings now so this is a good option. I hope you find your happy.

Sunshine - just sit and soak up as much as you can.

There are some very good reports regarding using artificial sunlight such as the Verilux lights. These have been used for a long time for those affected by long dark winters, jet lag for example.

Depression is an unusual condition.  Depression can be inherented, (possibly from someone never diagnosed) or

depression comes from a long ordeal involving terrible stress or trauma.

The brain quits making a chemical/enzyme necessary for well being.
