By the way, I had some (cooled) coffee on my 3 hour trip home. Just a few sips taken carefully as my mouth was numb! That was in between my dozing. Maybe having a beverage of whatever you drink would help you avoid any problems. Let us know how you do. Good luck.

No, you won't need anyone with you when you get home.  It's not anesthesia, they aren't knocking you out, you don't lose consciousness.  It's just a light sedation that puts you in a relaxed state and blocks the pain. Some patients don't even drift off; they are just a little "loopy" during the procedure.

Re: Dental sedation

[ Edited ]

Thankfully I have no fear of dentistry.....or pain. I use Novocain when having a root canal or crown....but never want any kind of drug.  When I have had small cavities worked on, I chose in most cases to just forgo the Novocain and deal with a little discomfort. Every drug has its dangers...even Novocain can,in some people, cause your heart to stop....

I do not want a dentist office putting me under and something goes wrong.... you think it will not happen....but if it does, I doubt the dentist is going to be able to bring you back. It is not where you want to be if your heart stops!

My dentist uses Versed. You can't drive a car until the next day.

@SilleeMee I was given Versed for cataract surgery.  I heard the nurse say  'start it".  Then he started the IV and the next thing I heard was the doctor saying "beautiful, all done".....

I was awake, alert and could have driven home if they let me.  I had it both times (2 wks apart) and was never "loopy"....  I guess everyone is different....

Novacaine works just fine for me too, even for root canals.

It was like that for me, too, @sophiamarie

I got Versed when I had deep scaling on my teeth. I have very sensitive teeth and the Novocaine wasn't helping...I was nervous and afraid so that's why they gave it to me. Godsend!

The only time I ever had sedation for a dental procedure was when I had my wisdom teeth taken out by an oral surgeon in 1980 & I don't recall much about it.  Since then, for fillings & crowns, I've just had local numbing shots by my dentist.

@Loves Purple

AMazing they let you drive home alone after sedation. I’m shocked.

I've had "gas" for dental surgery and had novocaine shots countless times.

Never had any issue with having someone with me.

Thank you again so much for your messages. With my dental anxiety I could not get thru a long appt without sedation!  I am way too nervous and hate anything to do with dentists lol.   I feel better knowing it should be fine and I wont feel very loopy or out of it after!
