I have contemplated doing this for a long time. I went ahead and ordered  The 23 and me

Health + Ancestry Personal Genetic Test. The They had $20.00 off and another $5 off through  Mr Rebates.

I want to know more background of my family DNA. Any health risks I may not know about as well.  I will update went I get the results.

I was adopted at a very young age so I never knew anything so at 68 I thought I'd try. First I got Ancestry and then 23 and me which gave me more information than Ancestry. I really wish I would have done the medical for the extra  charge. It is so fascinating because they go way back to Neandethal days. Now I got my son tested and we were amazed again. So good luck and have fun you ordered the right one.

Re: DNA Test Kits

[ Edited ]

It is not extensive healthwise. Why not just go to your doctor and get genetic testing?

Insurance does not cover very much....unless there is a medical risk involved. Most is done out of pocket for just your own knowledge. This kit is a good start....and then go from there.

I did the 23andme testing. I received quite a lot of medical information. After you receive your results, you can upload your raw data to promethease.com for much more genetic information. I had two different genetic tests done by my physician in the last few years. The results I received from 23andme and promethease were right on. After you receive your results, you continue to receive updates on new genetic tests that they perform.

You also receive information about possible relatives. I contacted one gal who my mother had been her mother's maid of honor in the 1940's. We've talked on the phone and stayed in touch. Today I received information about someone I never heard of who is a 1st cousin. Should be interesting to hear from him.

That would be serious individual medical genetic testing, each test per issue you want to find out about, and they run in the thousands per test.

The type of genetic disease testing all three major companies do is pretty superficial and doesn't cover that many conditions, many of them fairly obscure.

I know, I had it.  It wasn't in the thousands and insurance covered more than half for what I had done.

Read the fine print to determine who owns your DNA once it's submitted.

You  may want to re-think this.

I could be dumb, or just paranoid, but no one gets my DNA.  I'm not that curious.

A friend had it done and I don't know which one. However, it found she was of "European ancestry." I thought that was way too general for my satisfaction.
