So sorry that happened to your husband. Hope he's ok.

Did the police find the woman & dog? You never know when one might bite.

One of ours bit DH when he was cleaning out the dogs ears when he had an infection. The Vet showed him what to do.

DH was not planning on going to the doctor. I told him he had to go because it will get infected. He went to the Minor Care Clinic. They cleaned it out gave him a tetanus shot plus antibiotics.

They did not believe it was our dog at first. They wanted to call the police. DH told them it's my dog & the police are not taking him. The dog could not help it. He had an ear infection.

I assume they found her as they haven't gotten back to us.  I'm glad your DH went to the doctor.

My friend's own dog bit her hand and she had to go to get stitches and a tetanus shot. Then the ER made a report of the incident and that's when we learned that the dog had to get placed into quarantine until it was verified the dog was not rabid (that's the law here)....it was not but then the dog bit her again so I took the dog myself to the humane society and told them the dog was a biting dog. They had records to confirm that.....it was not long for the world after that unfortunately.

ETA- evidently my friend lied to me about how many times that dog had bitten her. She was afraid that the dog had to go if she told the officials..Woman Sad

Good for you, I hope your friend appreciated that you were only looking out for her.

@sunsetbeach.  In the case of the two dogs your dh encountered, animal control should require they be muzzled on walks

Or a shorter leash so they can be controlled better.

My DH told me that before she got close to him, she did wrap that leash around her hand a couple of times.  It makes us wonder if the dog had lunged at people before.

Bad enough it was your husband, I always think what if it was a child.  Even on a leash, they need to be able to control their dogs!!

@sunsetbeach  I'm so sorry to hear about your DH. I hope he is feeling better soon. My husband and I have both been attacked by cats that we owned. One bit his arm when he tried to get it from behind a shed and a different cat attacked me out of the blue. It latched onto my arm and wouldn't let go. He went to the ER and I saw a doctor and was on antibiotics for a while. These were on separate occasions. It is very common to be bitten by cats and dogs.

I do that with the leash all the time when I'm walking my dog, if we pass someone.  I don't want her even going up to another person on our walks, not because she has ever gone after anyone or another animal but because people just may not want a dog near them.

I had a dog once that out of the blue snapped at the mail carrier.  I was walking my dog into the vet on a leash and the mail carrier walked by.  My dog turned and went at him and snapped at him.  Luckily he didn't bite him because the carrier jumped out of the way.  I don't know what happened that day because it had never happened before and it never happened again.

@qualitygal  They certainly do. There are huge signs about controlling your dogs where I walk mine and most of the time people obey them, yet the other day when I was out a woman had her dog off it's leash and was trying to catch it in a large area. As we walked past her she mumbled something as she finally caught it. I didn't say anything but dogs not only attack people they attack other dogs. Control is a must.

Hi @Kachina624 ,

I hate to disagree with you(or maybe just the ER doctor), but!!  Very few things on this planet can be predicted at 100%. I know many doctors, several that are ER doctors(had 3 playing in my hockey league at the same time) and for many years. Knowing them personally, they don't appear to be 100% sure of a lot of things.

Maybe that ER doctor just an exaggerating to get your attention, beats me. As I mentioned in my other post, I have been bitten by many, many cats, and was able to take care to clean it myself, and at home. No infections but the one I mentioned, our little furry one. Treated the after bite pretty much how I did all the others, and BAM. I was shocked the next morning, it happened pretty late the night before, and I didn't really think much of it till I woke up.

Anyways, Happy New Year to you and yours!

Animal lover here, as is my wife. I have been bitten by both, a dog and a cat, in fact, several felines over decades now. The dog bite I got a tetanus shot and went on my way with life.

The cat bite, our own Indoor Only Male feline. We were putting on his gel type Flea and tick meds, it takes 2 of us with a couple of our cats. Anyways he managed to bite my hand and it hurt like he!!. I washed it off good an cleaned it with an antiseptic and chalked it off as 1 more bite.

By the next morning my hand was red/warm and swollen. Couldn't get in to see my GP, so my sis called her son-in-law, who is a doctor in the same group. I got in to see him and he sent me directly to the ER where they started an IV antibiotic and I was admitted to the hospital. By then i didn't even recognize my left hand.

I had Cellulitis and spent 6+ days in the hospital and they called in a Disease Specialist to work with the team of doctors. Was months before I could do much with my left hand. Not a pleasant experience.

Our vet checked our our cat and said that many had certain types of bacteria in his mouth and it was not that

uncommon. Needless to say we have a different approach now when placing on his protection.

I hope all goes well with DH and he has no problems.

@hckynut  A former neighbor was attacked by a barn cat and went through a similar situation. She even had to have surgery on her arm. She boarded her horse at a particular barn and had never had an issue until one decided to jump on her and attack her out of the blue. Glad things turned out well for you.
