You can go to Amazon and buy a Keto Diet book; there are thousands of them.  Type in Keto diet for beginners.  You can also ask his doctor to refer your husband to a dietician at the nearest hospital.  He's an absolutely awful doctor!!!!

"absolutely awful doctor"......she asked for no unkind remarks.........

@nana59

Not unusual for this one, rarely a good thing to say about anyone or anything.

Re: DH doctor appointment and diet suggested- need more info

@SouthernBee  I am very familiar with the ketogenic diet and if your husband's physician prescribed it, then I can suggest how to go about following it.

Clean out your cupboards of all sugary treats, pretzels, potato chips and simple starches like potatoes and spaghetti. Bread will be off limits as most keto-friendly breads taste like cardboard, Fruit in very limited quantities and bananas are not permitted. Your husband can eat plain fish (nothing coated with bread crumbs), chicken, beef or pork. Salads are OK with a myriad of vegetables going easy on carrots and beets as they have more sugar. Pick a salad dressing that is not laden with sugar. Oil and vinegar is fine. Watch out for tomatoes as they can keep some people out of ketosis. You can always use spaghetti squash sprinkled with cheese and a very light tomato sauce that does not contain sugar as a tasty substitute for pasta.

Purchase some "keto sticks" so he can "test" whether he is in ketosis. Walmart has the brand Reli Ketone strips and they are very efficient in telling whether your husband will reach a "ketogenic" state. That is when he will see a change on the scale...

The reason many physicians recommend a short term ketogenic diet is because once in ketosis most people completely lose their appetite. It is almost like a miracle whereas when people eat calorically controlled diets, they often deal with hunger. A ketogenic diet eliminates that problem.

I am a Type 1 diabetic and used to be a leader at meetings for self-care/support for diabetics. Many patients were on a short term ketogenic diet and had excellent results on it. As long as your husband is being monitored by his physician he should be fine. Make sure he drinks a lot of water, though, because sometimes early on a patient will have some dehydration.

Let us know how he is doing. In the beginning it is an adjustment. For instance, instead of skim milk in his coffee he would be better off with cream or half and half. Skim milk has more sugar. Just a few tips for getting into ketosis and staying there...

@SouthernBee.  My IPad is also doing that. Maybe for the past few weeks. Husband reset the router, etc so it isn’t doing it as much, but still every once in awhile.

@SouthernBee

Did the doctor order a full blood panel test? Am just wondering why the B-12 shot(I get them  monthly), mine are given because of my massive blood transfusions and iron infusions. What exactly are they "checking weekly"? Most doctors don't usually check weight loss every week, if that is some of his problem.

I know only what I read about the Keto Diet and what I have read, it isn't something I would ever even consider. My body needs carbs to function at my high activity levels, and what I eat, primarily consists of complex carbohydrates.

If your husband won't eat  "many of the listed vegetables", guess he will just have to eat the ones he likes, it this "diet" is right for him. Changing health or weight issues all boil down to 1 person, the one with the issue, if they are an adult.

Hope others here can tell you more about Keto.

@proudlyfromNJ @and @SouthernBee — the problem I am having lately here with my iPad is that the posts keep coming up in the mobile version and I have to keep changing it to the full view.

@hckynut, the OP stated in her posts that this a physician prescribed diet. Her husband is going to be closely monitored which probably is best on a ketogenic diet. A ketogenic diet is a good diet to relieve hunger. I suspect since the OP shared that her husband is often hungry that is why his physician prescribed it. It is great to drive down insulin which often increases appetite.

Hope you are well...

Re: DH doctor appointment and diet suggested- need more info

I think @Trinity11 helped explain the why and how, but I doubt he will follow the program. I believe he would try to sabotage @SouthernBee  when she was trying to lose weight by bringing home doughnuts and fast food. The life and death nature of this might make him comply but I have my doubts.
