Re: DH doctor appointment and diet suggested- need more info

Hi, I am a dietitian and no one should go on a Keto diet.  You show an instant weight loss due to ketosis which leads to fluid loss and dehydration.  The first thing to do is cut your portions in half.  Use a smaller plate and eat slower. Does you husband drink sweetned beverages or beer.  ?  If so , it is time to change to diet drinks ,unsweetned tea, or water with lemon or lime.  Most men just love to eat so have healthy fruits like apples, pears or peaches on hand.  Move more and eat less but still have foods you love because it is a lifetime change.

You can go to Amazon and buy a Keto Diet book; there are thousands of them.  Type in Keto diet for beginners.  You can also ask his doctor to refer your husband to a dietician at the nearest hospital.  He's an absolutely awful doctor!!!!

Is your husband diabetic, @SouthernBee?  I’m wondering if he needs to get his blood sugars down quickly.

I’d check into intermittent fasting if he’s agreeable to limiting his eating to a 6-8 hour window.  There is so much info on YouTube and other podcasts on KETO and intermittent fasting.

DH  was told by doctor that something needed to be done and knew DH needs fast results to be  encouraged for much needed changes. Doctor suggested Keto diet. Given food shopping list and told to research diet. DH given a B12 shot and will be seen on a weekly basis for a month to check results. Have done research and very confused. I need menu plans. Only meat on list was beyond meat and chicken . Many vegetables listed DH will not eat. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Please no unkind remarks. Southern Bee

ask for a referral to a dietician,  you also mentioned before about your husband's issue with diet and what he likes ,  perhaps both of you need to go

does he ever cook or like to,

menu plans are not that hard to come up with, it's just boring ,

FWIW . I am not sure the Dr is terrible, sounds as though the DH has been in many times and told to adjust his food intake and the message isn't getting there,  it's a tough thing to hear ---

@chrystaltree : He is a very good doctor. Surprised that doctor isn’t totally fed up and told DH to find another doctor. It is very frustrating and difficult getting him to a doctor or anyone else. I am in a hard spot. My doctor told me to eat better in January and only loss 6 pounds. DH has food on the brain constantly. Growing up- he went to bed every night hungry. Southern Bee

@SouthernBee  do you think he would see a therapist? His hunger might be something she could help him with

Not unusual for this one, rarely a good thing to say about anyone or anything.

Perhaps it will help @SouthernBee

@SouthernBee

I agree with others here, see a dietition for a meal plan.

If DH won't go, you go and tell them that you need a meal plan for him, they'll help you.

Don't fall for the 'hype' on some of the 'diets' online, a lot of the people pushing them have absolutely no medical or nutritional training and many of these so called diets have had adverse reactions in quite a few patients.

A licensed dietition will contact his Dr. to find out what his particular diet needs are and give you sound advice on meal plans to achieve his goals.

Wishing the best for you and DH in this journey!Heart
