My  gastro doc is very laid back, and tries his best to make the prep as comfortable as possible for you. He allows you to choose any prep you may be familiar with, but he gives you citrate mag prep in liquid or pills in his office included, if you choose another one you are on your own as far as getting it and paying for it. He never recommends GoLytely.

I've been having regular colonoscopies for 11 years- early on 2 or 3 in 1 year. My GI drs at that time had me use  GoLytly as the prep. Awful stuff but you do what you ahve to do.The testing is too important!

I changed GI drs about  two years ago and he prescribed  4 ducolax pills and 8 oz miralax the day prior - and  1 gallon  clear liquid and 10 oz magnesium citrate the day of. It worked great.  I even had to take a picture in the bathroom at the drs office prior to the procedure! (tmi ??!! Woman LOL)

@Ibby114

How familiar this is for us. My bleeding started in 2008 and my last colonoscopy, bleeding again, was in October of 2015. That was #15 for colonoscopies, the other 5 were the Double Balloon Enteroscopies, the first one took over 4 hours. Much lengthier procedure in both time and the scope.

Now each blood draw I hope my Hemoglobin is not dropping. Just saw the doc this am, and it was 15.3. Ain't seen it that high for a very long time. Still have to wait for Iron Ferritin reading which they have to send out. If it is low? Another Iron Infusion coming up.

As for "tmi? When an in patient, was how I had most of them, I had to call the nurse for the viewing. What those nurses have to go through on their job. Can't thank most of them enough.

Hopefully you are good to go for a long time with this issue. Enough already, right?

@hckynut I've been good since my colon resection- I wasn't even 50 at the time! But I'm very cautious, have regular physicals and watch my numbers carefully. I've graduated to every 5 years now! My  new GI doctor is much  more of a  partner with my heath than the previous group ,I'm so glad I switched!

@A60_Chevy

Either my brain is off kilter or what you said in your post is??? As one that has had 15 colonoscopies, I have no clue what the "old fashioned way" even means.

Before the Colonoscopy became the Gold Standard of viewing ones Colon, I had 2 Sigmoidoscpoies.performed. This procedure does not view a majority of the colon.

@A60_Chevy. Is this your idea of making a joke? If so, to this old man, I do not find it the least bit humorous.

@hckynut John, I'm not sure what your internal problem is but I'll bet you can answer this.  I was told yesterday that my friend (88) has a bleeding ulcer.  Black stool, etc.

How do they treat a bleeding ulcer?

@LBird ... When I went in for my colonoscopy last March, I told the gastroenterologist that a friend told me she has her colonoscopies while fully awake. I asked him if that was possible. He said that some people do request not to be put under. Other people ask to be put under only while they are going up into the colon, and then they wake them up on the way out. He said that the part on the way out is not as uncomfortable.

I chose to be put on another planet. The prep was the worst part, but after it is done, the whole thing seemed like nothing. Sending prayers your way that all goes easily and well!

Hi @Zhills,

My wife has had 2 different bleeding ulcers. Both times she passed out at home, on 1 occasion she stopped breathing. They were both very scary situations for me. Called 911 both times and rushed her to the ER.

Our Gastro Doctor found this via Endoscopy and that is also the way they repaired it, but that was the next day. Not sure if they use a different scope to repair, but I do know they need to do some sewing or something similar to repair it.

They did it the following day because her Hemoglobin was so low she needed 2 units of blood and 2 bags of Frozen Plasma transfused before they would do this surgical repair. She was in the hospital for 4 days with the last one.

She had to take a prescription of Carafate(sp) for her followup Endoscopy 8 weeks after the surgery. Took a few months to get her Hemoglobin levels back up, and like myself, she too needed an Iron Infusion because of low Iron Ferritin levels. Do that as an outpatient and it usually takes 4 hours, depending on the amount and type of Iron being Infused.

Any more questions I am pretty sure I can answer them if your friends issue is the upper bleeding ulcer. If I can't I will ask my wife and see if she was told something when I was not with her at the hospital.

My bleeding has all been from my Right Colon, the furthest end of the Colon. That is why my bleeding was so difficult to locate, thus my now 15 colonoscopies and 5 Double Balloon Enteroscopies.

Let me know how your friend is doing. Wish her the best from my wife and myself. You take care also,

@Yardlie

During my month long stay in the hospital when they could not locate my colon bleed, I had 2 colonoscopies with no Anesthesia. The doctors wanted me awake to be able to bring my knees to my chest, and a few other movements.

They were hoping this would make the bleeding more profuse, which might help them find the source of the bleed. Did not help.

Was sent to another hospital where they had the High Definition Double Ballon Enteroscopy equipment. Took procedure, the lower part, took over 4 hours and my wife was really shaken up that time.

While the no Anesthesia was uncomfortable, I have had more painful things happen to this old body. I would not recommend this to anyone, unless like myself, the have no option. I sure don't want anyone to bypass having a Colonoscopy because of something I say in this post.

Get the Profofol and you won't remember much, if any of the actual procedure. Just a message to message to everyone:. JUST GET IT DONE!  It might save your life.

@hckynut I am truly sorry that you and your wife have had some serious health problems but I want you to know that your experiences and the willingness to share (even TMI) them with the BB is a blessing.

You will never know how many people you gave the courage to "just go get it done" and how many lives you may have saved.

THANK YOU, JOHN
