@LBird, do you get other preventive/screening medical testing done?  Pap smears, mamograms, blood work, even dental cleanings?  It is all the same - testing done to potentially reduce medical problems later on.

DH was one of those rough, tough construction workers.  I can't tell you how many of his buddies around the country have died from colon cancer.  These guys work away from home most of the time and don't take time off to get things like colonoscopies done - until it is too late. Like John said, don't blow your engine.

I was the same way when I turned 50 and didn't want to have a colonoscopy.  Then my daughter's father-in-law found out he had colon cancer at 54.  He died about 8 months later. Watching him go through colon cancer gave me the incentive I needed to get it done! If only he had gotten a colonoscopy when he turned 50.

I just had an argument with my daughter over this. She got hers  and thats ok,she can do whaT SHE WANTs .sHE IS 60  (i THINK)

Everyone please excuse the caps and small letters. It was an accident,I must have pressed some key...........and I am in a hurry to feed my furbaby so I cannot retype this,,,,,thanks

@MalteseMomma- the guidelines state the colonoscopies should not be done after age 75 for screening purposes.

Funny you should mention age.  When I saw the physician assistant at the GI doctor's office (they just have to see you before they schedule you, lol), she and I were talking about needing someone present.  I said you know, I don't like to inconvenience people to take time off of work for this.  What happens if one day when I am old, I have no one to bring me or sit around and wait for me.  She said, oh, we stop doing them once you get to a certain age.  I can't remember the magic number.

Gave me hope that I will only be probed every 5 years a couple more times and that will be it, he he he.

@Bird mama- 75 is the age limit

Get it over with and get it done, if all is good, you can go 10 years till you have to test again. Test is nothing, prep is the worst part. I used citrate of magnesium pills, very easy. Just do it!!!

I didn't want one either and since I have no family histor of colon cancer and no symptoms; I had the non invasive Cologuard.  If that indicated a problem, I would have had a colonoscopy.

@chrystaltree

If you are fine with the 13% false positives, and will settle for 87% accuracy as compared to 100% via Colonoscopy it is certainly your choice. I have seen too many friends and also co-workers die of colon cancer, I prefer the 100% tests when they exist.

You should get the colonoscopy for peace of mine.

I've had three colonoscopies, I believe.  The only negative for me was that after the first one, I was very sick for the rest of the day from the anesthesia.  I told the doctor about it when he called later for a wellness check.  He said next time, I should take an anti nausea pill.  Five years later, when it was time, I asked the doctor if taking a Dramamine tablet beforehand would be ok and he said yes.  No nausea at all afterwards.

Funny to be is the fact that although I have hemmoroids, I couldn't tell anything had been back there, lol.
