It might be to late but when I can 'feel' the sore starting I hold an ice cube on my lip and I know I have stopped the sore from erupting....it cannot hurt to try it now. Those things are sooo ugly....and painful

Same here. If I feel that twinge on my lip that lets me know I'm about to get a cold sore, I get out the ice cubes. I've never found anything as effective, even if I don't catch it at first. I keep the ice on my lip as long as possible, several times a day.

Abreva. Kinda pricey but worth it!

Yes, lysine taken orally (as others have said) has helped me. It is the pits to have a big honking cold sore visible for all the world to see - I had one last year that left a scar above my upper lip. And they do seem to take forever to go away. I feel for you!

Valtrex! Knocks it right out and no painful healing. Abreva is OK in an emergency but with co-pay Valtrex is better.

Abreva for me also. If I start using it as soon as that tingle shows up, often it never totally manifests.

This may sound crazy, but my brother was doing some work for a dentist. She noticed my brother had a cold sore and asked about his treatments. He told her, campho, zovirax, anbesol........she told him at the first sign of it coming to spray a little lysol on his finger and dab it on his lip. It kills 99% viruses. He's done it since and it has worked well. I would make sure not to get it IN my mouth though.

For us Herpecin L and underneath that it says HL 30.

It works like a charm for us.

Quick, effective, and easy to dispense same type as roll up chapstick.

My 2 cents (also suffer from cold sores)

When you start feeling one coming, ice it. I normally put a cube of ice in a plastic ziplock bag and ice it for several minutes at a time. It will prevent the cold sore to come out.

If it's already out, as it seems to be your case, Abreva. It will subside in 48 hours.

Good luck!
