Just curious if anyone who has chronic kidney disease can answer...were you diagnosed with this initially strictly by your GFR value? Or were there other blood levels that were off like creatinine or BUN?

@chiclet, I hope you get all the answers you need tomorrow and guidance to keep your kidney issues stable. Will be thinking of you and hope your appointment goes well.

Protein in urine and GFR were abnormal.  I have had blood in urine for over 40 years.

Thank you very much for your reply, @chiclet. I ask because my GFR has been around 64 or so the last couple times. Although technically not under the 60 mark it still concerns me a bit. MY PCP never says a word about it and there are times I don't have the most confidence in him...need to find a new one but not that easy to do this days.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I wish you good luck today with your appointment! Thanks again for replying.

Re: Chronic kidney disease stage 3a

You need to relax. You already have the kidney disease so there is no point in self treating and thinking about changing what you eat.   When you see the nephrologist, he or she will do the assessment and give you instructions and a treatment plan.  That will include food restrictions, if there are any.

@chiclet- Limit or avoid foods high in protein, phosphrus, sodium and potassium.

Colas, chocolate and dairy are to be limited or avoided. And potatoes and spinach because they are high in oxalates

The National Kidney Foundation at wwwdotkidneydotorg is a good resource on nutrition.

Re: Chronic kidney disease stage 3a

I went to my Nephrologist yesterday and really nothing remarkable. I have CKD but don't know how it will progress or why I have it since I don't have diabetes or high blood pressure.  My mother died at 39 with kidney disease so I figure it is just hereditary.  He suggested a biopsy.  I had one when I was around 30 and was really told nothing.  I will consider it.   I went to the Urologist for cysts etc. and was told my test was fine and then the kidney doctor says I have a lesion in the kidney that is probaby nothing but needs follow up by the urologist.  The urologist was very nice but his office is a mess.  People in there complaining about not getting tests results etc. etc.  So what do I tell the urologist.  Should I say the kidney doctor says you need to do something about the lesion you did not even tell me about.

The first time I went to the kidney doctor I did not like him at all.  He was double masked and almost rude.  Yesterday he was unmasked so I got to see his face and expressions and he was able to see me.  He was a lot nicer but I don't know if I feel he is a doctor I want to see forever as this problem is a forever problem.  He told me I did not have to make any dietary changes.  I asked if I could eat chocolate (my favorite thing) which I have not eaten since April when I went on a diet to lose my Covid weight.  He said yes just try to eat healthy.  I am going to back to eating the things I like but in moderation and making sure I don't gain back the 25 lbs I lost.

I worked for a GI doctor for 21 years..  I worked for a wonderful caring doctor and things were so different medically back then.  They did not send you on a wild goose chase from doctor to doctor spanning months for tests etc.   If you had a serious problem he admitted you called in specialist for consults and had a diagnoses within the week and treatment or surgery shortly after.  When my husband had cancer I figured out that they say it is important to catch it early because you will spend months running from doctor to doctor getting ready to start the treament.

I am sorry to sound so witchy...I am really grateful with my family history to have made it to 71.  I have lived my life without much medication, little pain, symptons or surgery.  I feel I have been very fortunate and blessed.  Working in the medical field years ago comparing it to now is not a good thing.  Sometimes the less you know the better.  My problem has always been curiosity and why questions.  I won't take a pill without researching it.

The doctor gave me lisinopril to help with the protein in my urine.  It can lower your blood pressure and my is already low so we will see how that goes.

For those who read my rant thank you.  I really appreciate all the info I get on these boards and support you give each other.

Re: Chronic kidney disease stage 3a

@chiclet  Ask your primary care doctor to recommend another doctor. If this is a doctor "you don't THINK you want to see" it's a doctor you "KNOW " you don't want to see.

You will be seeing this doctor for the long haul. Find someone you're comfortable with.  You may need to do some footwork but it will be worth it to find someone you're comfortable with.

Good Luck.
